Reader's POV

Tensions were high as we prepared to sneak into WICKED. I kept glancing at Thomas, sensing his uneasiness. I took a deep breath as I watched him load a gun. Before I could stop myself, I decided to walk over to him.

"Hey," I said not really knowing what else I was going to say to him.

"Hi," he said as he unloaded and then reloaded his gun.

I hesitated, nervously biting my lip, as I ran my hand through my hair. "Look," I sighed. "I know you don't really like this plan. . ."

"Don't really like this plan?" He scoffed. I jumped a little when he slammed the gun down on the table. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw everyone look towards us.

He looked up at me, my breath getting caught in my throat. "I hate this plan, Y/N. I think it's dangerous, risky, and just plain idiotic. I can think of at least a hundred different ways it could go wrong. And almost all of them involve you getting hurt. Or worse, killed."

I sighed as he stormed past me. I looked over to see everyone watching us. "I'll umm," I cleared my throat. "I'll be right back."

I walked outside, instantly scanning the empty alley for Thomas. When I found him, he was sitting on the ground, leaning against the outside of the parking garage we were hiding in.

I walked over and, without saying anything, sat down next to him. I wrapped my arms around my knees, pulling them into my chest.

"Thomas," I said my voice instantly getting caught in my throat.

"I can't lose you again, Y/N."

I looked over at him expecting to see him looking at me, but he wasn't. Instead, he was looking straight ahead. I followed his gaze to see him staring holes into the side of WICKED Headquarters.

"I mean," he sighed. "I want to rescue Minho but. . . We've already lost so many people. I can't. . . I can't add you to that list." His voice cracked as a tear finally slid down his cheek.

My eyes began to water as he dropped his head and closed his eyes. I was about to reach out and grab his arm but hesitated. "Thomas," I said, my voice breaking. "You aren't going to lose me."

"You can't promise that," he said finally looking at me. My heart sank as I saw the tears he was trying to keep from falling. "I don't like this plan, Y/N. . . Just know that when it comes down to it, I am not putting your life in danger."

My heart sank as I watched Thomas walked back inside. I leaned my head against the wall behind me and let out a shaky breath. With a sigh, I stood up and slowly headed back inside.

All I could do as Thomas, Newt, and Gally put on the guard uniforms we stole a few weeks ago was bite my nail and pace back and forth. I couldn't stop imagining the different ways this could all go wrong. I kept thinking about how I would feel if one of them got hurt.

"Y/N?" I gasped when I felt something hit me. I looked down to see an empty bullet shell. I furrowed my eyebrows as I looked back up to see everyone staring at me.

"You okay?" Gally asked.

"I'm fine," I said, clearing my throat. "You guys ready?" They all gave me hesitant nods. Everyone except for Thomas. He just stared at me with sad, soft eyes. I cleared my throat that was tightening more and more the longer I stared at Thomas.

"Let's go."

*****

Getting into WICKED with the guys in guard uniforms was easy. We didn't turn a single head as they escorted me inside. Thomas was on my right, Newt was on my left and Gally was walking slightly behind us.
