I handed her the file. "Thanks," she smiled before heading out. This was barely a task but this makes me so hyped for my future as a nurse. When I finally do dedicate my life to this line of work, I know it will be well worth the wait.

I shut the lights off and headed out the room and back to my post. I sat down and blew out a breath. It was only 8 and I wasn't scheduled to leave until 2. I pressed my face into my hand and looked at my nails.

A few minutes passed before someone tapped the counter. I looked up and Velle was staring back at me. "Hey whats wrong?" I asked, judging by his face he either had something to tell me or shit was about to go down.

"Nothing. When you on break?" he asked. I looked at my watch, "In like 10," I answered before looking back up at him. "I'ma wait for you out in the car," he spoke. I nodded and got ready to ask him again if he was good but he turned and walked right out.

I sighed. I swear I can't stand when he doesn't open up to me, that shit irks me because I tell him everything. Anything he wanna know, he does.

I pressed my palm against the table and Dr. Brown came to me. I hope he doesn't ask me to do shit, because I'm not trying stay longer than I have to.

"How did the physical go?" he asked, I pulled up the file and handed it over. He read it over and nodded. "Good job, when's your break?" he asked. "At 8:15, why?" I answered.

"I was wondering if you wanted to go-" he paused to clear his throat, "-out to grab some coffee or something."

"Uh..um I guess that would be cool but we'd have to reschedule. I'm going somewhere with my boyfriend," I threw in quickly. His whole expression dropped.

"Oh?" his light complexion reddened.

I nodded, smiling at how adorable he looked. It wasn't like he was ugly, he would have most definitely got a chance if I wasn't with Velle, but that's not the case. Besides the way I catch these females in here checking for him I knew he could easily be with one of them.

"Well it's your break time," he rubbed the back of his neck. I glanced at my watch and he was right. "Yeah you're right. I should get going." I slid out the booth, his eyes still on me.

I ducked my head down and headed to the employee longue. I checked out and made my way to the exit. I saw Velle's car and made my way over to him. I slid into the passenger seat and he looked up while I locked the door.

"What's wrong?" I cut straight to the point.

"My father," he paused. I never heard of Velle's father before, it was always his mother. I figured it was a sore topic so I never brought it up but looking at his face expression it looked like he had a lot of shit to spill on this man.

"-is out of jail." he said his face was void of any emotions, completely stoic. Mind you, I know nothing about his father so it was a shock he was in jail.

"Jail? Why?" I cleared my throat. He turned to me, "Domestic violence."

| domestic • violence / domestic abuse, also known as spousal abuse, occurs when one person in an intimate relationship or marriage tries to dominate and control the other person. Domestic abuse that includes physical violence is called domestic violence. |

"How many years?" I asked, grabbing his free hand that was clenching the wheel too tight. "Five." he looked down.

"Okay so what's the problem?" I asked.

"The fuck you mean. Before he got in he beat my moms ass every damn day non stop that nigga was a straight alcoholic, he was the only person who put fear in me. My mom so blinded by love let this go on for years until one day I called the pigs on him. He got locked up and ever since he been calling me in prison talking about revenge. I just know he not gon let this shit go," he started shaking his head and pulled out my grip. He looked so scared it made me almost want to cry.
