Chapter One Hundred Fourteen

Start from the beginning

Once again I have to see Spencer barely hanging on to life. I am only convinced she's alive because I see the shallow rise and fall of her chest. I take the seat that Melina was previously sat in, take Spencers hand in between mine, and bring it to my lips.

I see Yelena out of the corner of my eye move around the bed to the other side, leaning against the bed once she sits in that chair.

I hear the door close behind me and know that Melina and Alexei left us alone with Spencer.

"Come on, Spence. I don't know what or who did this to you, but I need you. I need you to wake up. And not in a day or a week or a month.

"I need you more than air, Spencer. I know we may have hit a bit of a rough patch lately.. but I need you in my life. Whatever it is, we can work through it. Just please.. please, don't leave me."

I can't say anymore as I let the sobs take over my body.

I close my eyes and let my head fall to Spencers chest and just breath. The familiar scent of her perfume somehow lingering even now, giving me a sense of comfort.

There's a blanket covering her, masking
whatever wound her body is trying to heal.

I'm not ready to know or to see it.

I'm only focused on my breathing as it matches Spencers. Feeling her lungs take in air and then let it out is keeping me grounded. Feeling her body in my arms and beneath mine let's me know she's still real.

I let this take all of my attention, not wanting to let anything else in, not allowing anything to break this tiny bubble.

It only lasts a few minutes.

I hear the door open slowly but refuse to move. I know there's a presence that sits next to me. There's a hand on my shoulder.

Melina speaks up quietly, "your friend Tony said that he might be able to help. Said his suit could do something. He can take a look if you want him to. You don't have to answer me now, but if you want him to, I can go talk to them. Or if you'd like to, they're outside waiting in your jet."

This is enough to force my head up. "They're waiting outside? Why?" My voice sounds hoarse from all of the crying.

"They said they wanted to give you some space, some time. They know how much she means to you. They weren't going to invade the home and try to see her when they know how much you needed to."

This would bring me to tears if I had anymore left in me.

Of course they waited outside. Even though they care about her and want to see her and know she's okay, they are making sure we have the time with her first.

I really do love these people.

I let out a shaky breath.

I look over to Yelena. Her eyes are red and puffy, she looks defeated. But she's looking to me, letting me know it's my call.

"Um.. yeah. Let him come check on her. But I'm not leaving the room."

"They didn't expect you to," she gives me a smile. But I can see how much stress she is feeling, how worried she is. "I'll have them come right in."
