Chapter 58: While They Were Sleeping

The room was a mess. Clothes were strewn everywhere. The service cart was laden with used dishes and utensils. But the mess was only in her peripheral view. Her eyes were riveted to the couple on the bed towards which she gingerly made her way.

Jacinta Rosales Fullerton has long since known that her son was sexually active. Very much in fact, but almost two years ago his activities with the opposite sex just went on a sudden stop, like he just quit cold turkey. Instead, work took up most of his time or rather he deliberately allowed his work to take up 99% of his time. She came to know of the reason when she checked on him one night after he came home very drunk. He was crying and kept on mumbling a girl's name like a broken record and kept asking her why she left. It was a pitiful sight to see and it broke her mother's heart to see her son like that.

'Could you be....' she asked Maine's sleeping form. Jacinta continued to stare, as if staring at the woman would give her the answer she needed.

RJ stirred in his sleep, hugging Maine closer to him with the use of both his arms and legs.

Mrs. Fullerton retreated immediately, afraid that RJ might open his eyes and find her there. When she stepped back, her shoe got entangled on the clothes strewn on the floor, making her grab the nearest thing she could hold on for balance, which to her dismay, is the food cart, jarring its contents.

'Oh no!' her mind screamed as her eyes widened in alarm as it followed the fall of the wine bottle. Jacinta closed her eyes and made a dive for the wine bottle in a desperate attempt to save it from crashing to the floor.

The thick carpet drowned the thud of her body landing on the floor. Jacinta sighed in relief. She looked back at the couple on the bed. 'They're still asleep!' She stood up quickly and ran to the door and got out. She leaned her back against the door and took deep breaths. Then she gaped at what she was holding and went back in.

Roberto in the meantime, was really starting to wonder if he was caught up in the twilight zone. The distance from where he stood and the crib wasn't really that long but it seemed to him that each step he took forward, was making him move  backwards instead. He had to look back thrice to see if he really did move from the spot where he first stood. And he found that he did.

So what's taking him so long to reach the crib?

He was afraid. That maybe instead of joy, what was inside the crib would only bring sorrow. Roberto looked heavenward. 'Please! I've only gotten her back.' He closed his eyes in silent plea.

Roberto slowly opened each eyelid to look at the baby in the crib. His breath hitched with what he saw.

He ran out of the room.

Jacinta placed her hand upon her thumping heart. She had just made a mad dash after returning the wine bottle on top of the cart. She almost missed to hit the light switch again when she went out the door. The soft click of a door closing made her turn to where it came from.

She immediately ran to him and touched his cheek. "Why do you look like you've just seen a ghost?"

"He has my face!" He told her, not really answering her question.

Her brows knit. "Who does?"

Without thinking, he took her inside the room that he just fled from.
