Chapter 23: Richard Sebastian

~~The Birth Centre, Royal London Hospital, Maine's Room~~

Dr. Weismann chuckled. "Never mind. I'll let them in." standing up and going to the door to allow her family to come in.

Mrs. Mendoza rushed over to her daughter's side. "Maine! You can't possibly know how happy and relieved I feel right now," tears streaming down her cheeks.

Maine gave her mother a weak smile. "Then why are you crying?"

Mr. Mendoza smiled. "Your mother's threshold for tears was always low."

Maine reached out her hand to her father. "Tatay..."

Mr. Mendoza took her her hand, bringing it close to his heart. "I missed that. I'm sorry."

"I know and I understand." Maine smiled at her father.

Her mother put her arm around her husband and gave him a squeeze. Her heart felt bursting with content and bliss. Her family was now again complete with a wonderful new addition to boot.

Ray was standing at the foot of her bed. "How are you? You gave us all a scare back there."

I'm fine, but terribly weak."

The baby not used to the noise that all their conversation were making gave out a lusty cry, catching the attention of all those in the room with him and his mother. All was surprised with the volume of the cry that the child gave.

Maine gazed at her little boy lovingly. "He is so amazing. He is so small yet he could give such a powerful cry."

Mr. And Mrs. Mendoza agreed. "Yes. And he is such a wonderful miracle," touching the blanket that was wrapped around their grandson.

"At least we know nothing is wrong with his lungs," Ray commented wryly, covering one of his ears, not used to such a shrill cry.

Maine rocked her baby in her arms, trying to calm him down. "Shhh sweetheart... it's all right. Nothing is going to happen to you. Mommy is here," drawing the baby close to give him a kiss on his small forehead.

"Why don't you try placing him near your heart? They say that there is nothing more calming to a baby than its mother's heartbeat."

Maine's parents looked at Ray in surprise at the knowledge he has with what to do with newborns. He just gave them a shrug of his shoulders in reply. "What? I read you know."

Maine laughed. "He is a wider reader," giving Ray a wink.

Maine shifted the position of her baby to do what Ray suggested. The instant that the baby settled near her heart, he quieted down, fluttered his eyes and went back to sleep. Maine smiled in wonder and awe at her child.

"What do you plan to name him?"

Maine, not taking her eyes off her son said softly, "Richard..."

~~Royal London Hospital's Nursery~~

Three men were crowding the viewing window. Each one was scurrying to get the best view in the hall to see their children as the nurse pushed the cots near the window.
