Chapter 10 – Finding Blair

»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«»«

I didn’t know where I was at first; I was groggy when I woke up. I felt dusty and I couldn’t breathe. I had a cloth bounding my mouth. I was clearly not surprised but I whimpered into the dark as I lay there. I was in fact wondering how I will ever survive this kind of mess. What was my life going to be like when I actually married this man? Same as this? I might as well kill myself now before something else happens.

So it didn’t take me long when I lost consciousness again. I dreamt to be in a happier place, but all I saw was darkness.

(Hunter POV)

“Hello, yeah I was going to meet with her now, yes dad I will sure to bring her back” I replied monotonously and clicked off the phone.

She was indeed a little troublesome for me. Couldn’t she just obey me and just be normal. I sighed and went to the shop she was working at. It was nearly closing time; I brushed back my hair and hugged myself tighter. It was a chilly night; I hoped Blair actually managed to get a coat or something with her. I wouldn’t want to share a coat in this night if she was damn cold.

I saw the lights go off, and only the boy walk out. I watched him lock up and turn. Our eyes met and not only did I feel awkward. I’m sure the dirty look he gave me, made me realise Blair must have said something.

“Yo” I said as I nodded but he didn’t say anything just glared.

“She’s not here” he said after a while and turned to walk away

“You mean she left early?” I looked at his retreating back and shouted he didn’t turn around. “Hey! Where did she go?”

“To see her grandfather!” he replied back “I thought you knew!” He stopped and glared at me hard.

“Look I didn’t know anything; she said she finished at this time so I asked you what time.” I replied impatiently, was I this irritating at this age?

“Look I don’t know what you want with her, but leave her alone she had enough trouble this morning” he grilled back I was momentarily confused.

“What do you mean, trouble?” I tensed

“With that man who came and shouted at her and that girl, don’t tell me she didn’t tell you” Seth smirked, this boy really irritated me.

“No” I replied back clenching my fists

“Then back off” he growled I stared amused.

“She’s not your family she is mine. So why do you even give a damn” I taunted him this was fun.

“Listen, she may not be my family but she means more to me” he replied bitterly, I don’t know what did it, the blazing eyes or the caring part but it angered me.

“Like I said, she isn’t a fragile toy to be played around with, she is of course a…cousin. So you should back off” I replied back thinking carefully why she even said cousin.

“Like hell I would leave her, the last thing she needs is a guy like you, hounding on other girls while fondling others” he replied bitterly back to me. If it wasn’t for the fact he was Blair’s friend I would have knocked him out.

“Don’t accuse me of something little boy. You don’t know who I am and what I could do” I replied darkly I saw him flinch.

“Just leave her alone” he glared at me and shifted his bag and turned around to leave.

I swore under my breath. This boy was more than a childhood friend. Did he actually like her? Did she like him? Who the hell was he that had the right to say things like this? He was so damn lucky he is alive right now. I kicked the can, which was lying beside my feet a few inches away. I heard the can clank against hard ground making a nasty sound. I heard the beeping and cars rushing past me. It was late and I was tired, I needed to have a word with Blair make her have minimum contact with a fool like him. I went to check the hospital maybe she was with Michael? Should be considering she hasn’t done anything but worry about him.

It didn’t take long to get there. I was busy sulking to notice why I was sulking. This was stupid, why did I even care? I saw a nurse to ask her which room Michael was in, she looked at me with confusion.

“I’m his grandson” I replied, which in reality isn’t a lie. I was marrying his granddaughter.

“Oh this way, to your left room 324 right now he should be watching TV” the nurse replied back nicely and left me.

I walked towards the place and realised how much I hated hospitals. They irked me a lot, the only thing I can recall from this place was blood. I heard thunderous laughter coming from the room. The door was partially open. I peered in to see about three nurses, giggling and playing cards with him. I smirked this grandfather had some game still. I couldn’t help but chuckle, how did he end up being her grandfather was what bewildered me?

“Knock knock can I come in?” I stood beside the door to see everyone stare at me.

I saw the looks the girls gave me; at least two was older than me. Mid twenties and one that looked about nineteen. I wasn’t surprised to see a smirk play on the old man’s lips.

“Hunter come on in” Michael replied cheerfully “Meet my grandson to be ladies” he said with a wink at me.

“Grandson” said the blonde

“To” said the brunette

“Be?” replied the other brown haired girl

“HOW” Replied the three in unison, it was like watching a circus.

“Hello, Michael and ladies” I nodded and smiled

“He's going to marry my granddaughter in a couple of days” replied the old fogey with a twinkle in his eyes, I couldn’t help but smile at his boldness.

“Oh what a shame!” Said the blonde with a frown

“We shall leave you now Mr.Vanvoreen it was lovely playing with you again” said the brunette and the girls all left the room glancing back at us once more and giggling away.

“Come sit” Michael motioned me forward

“Blair isn’t here?” I said curiously making it not look suspicious. I saw the old man tense

“No, I thought she was with you” he panicked I heard it in his voice

“Of course! I just thought she would be here you know” I said casually

“No, she seems busy I swear that girl is too stubborn” growled the old man, he could definitely say that again.

“So I keep hearing” I chuckled

“What brings you’re here son” he said as he leaned back on his pillow eyes shifting to mine.

“Oh nothing just to check up on you, I still see you got some game left” I pointed he chuckled hard and I smiled.

“Of course not, they were being nice to me” he smiled “It’s good you have come I wanted to say something to you sit” he nodded towards the chair beside him.

“Of course” I did as he said and waited; he cleared his throat and looked at me seriously

“I know this will sound weird, but I need to know that Blair will be protected from the violence. I know what the Yakuza does son. I am fully aware of the murder and injuries, I want to know how much she will be exposed to and will she survive” Michael blurted and I stared at him.

He wasn’t stupid. He knew well what will happen if a wrong mistake in the gang could cause. He knew what was needed in the yakuza to be recognized and planned with. We yakuza were good and bad; being the third generation leader I had no time to dwell on issues of the previous leaders. I was grown up to be one of the best and only the best. I knew what went on in the world of violence; I knew what business we did. Even if I wanted to leave I would have a stake of large sums of money on my head. I had to fight in order to survive; I had to learn the business of the world in order to be top. But exposing this to a sixteen year old girl would be difficult.

“I will truthfully say that I will try hard to keep her safe. I know it is not much but I will do everything in my will power to protect her” I replied hoping he didn’t see my hesitation.

“I know you are hiding something from me” he declared after a sigh I was momentarily freaked out. I knew he was sharp but not this sharp. “I know it’s none of my business but if it affects Blair in any way I will personally come and slaughter you” he glared at me his eyes blazing.

“Of course” I replied back. The man had guts, how did grandfather become friends with him again?

“I’m not lying, the last thing the girl needs in her life is full of destruction all over again” whispered the man sadly I wondered what he meant. Was it that bad with Blair?

“Of course, I will do my best” I declared

“You’re sharp I wouldn’t doubt it for a moment, we will get along fine” Michael laughed loudly I joined in.

“I need to go now; it was nice chatting to you get some rest. I will tell Blair to pop by” I said as I waved goodbye and left.

I walked outside, huddled in my jacket. I flipped my phone open to see any calls or messages. Nothing. I knew she didn’t want to see me, and I wasn’t going to bother her. I went back home, not even thinking about the girl until the next morning.

It wasn’t until five in the morning; I received a call saying she was missing. It took me a while to understand what Declan was trying to say. Was I hallucinating?

“Slow down what the hell you saying?” I growled

“She’s not home it’s all trashed, we checked everywhere” Declan replied back

“What!” I growled “Where are you, I’m coming”

“Down Loopside Avenue” Declan replied back I clicked the phone off and grabbed the nearest jeans and shirt. And ran like a manic.

How was this possible? Then it hit me, she would still text me she was ok even if she was angry. She wasn’t the type to ignore calls or texts and would reply back. She wasn’t stupid; she knew what happens to her now once she is married. And after what happened last time it’s common sense. I cursed a million words and ran towards the place the boys were.

I found them breathless and sweating. All with worried expressions on their faces. This wasn’t a good sign I thought.

“Let’s check her house again might find some clues” I said they all nodded.

We rushed towards her house, the boys were right. It was a right mess; no it was like a bomb had hit it. Were they looking for Blair? She was with us so of course they must have. The way the place was dissembled it wasn’t a surprise to me.

“Look at this” Riley bellowed from the other room

We all ran to check what he found. And I cursed; I knew it was to do with a kidnapping. They knew she was ours, they knew. And I couldn’t hide her perfectly no more. But it did help confuse them even better, I took the white paper and read the contents. They had her somewhere on the east side.

So we headed out, I knew who they were. It was a large group of a small yakuza that couldn’t make it big enough. The failures of the place, I knew who they were working for and I cursed. If only they don’t pursue to make things worse. We got into the vehicle and rushed towards the place, it wasn’t long before we landed near Canarby Avenue, a rundown area with lots of old buildings.

“I’ll go alone, when I signal come” I replied they all nodded they never questioned me which was good enough.

I walked towards the middle of the rundown buildings, it was nearing sunrise. I could see the dusty places and broken glasses. Wherever she was I hoped to god she was ok. I would not only have one dead body but they will kill me too. I shuddered in disgust when did I ever become soft?

“KEN GET OUT HERE!” I screamed my voice echoed in the empty area.

“I see, you’ve finally come took you long enough” said the old man who came towards him from the shadows.

I saw his gangly hair tied up, his nostrils flaring. And his henchmen behind him. Ken Guard hated my grandfather with passion. He ruined the business with the illegal companies and forced him to quit. Loose everything and manage to join a pathetic weak gang that couldn’t trample anyone.

But now, he was joined with someone stronger only I didn’t know who it was. There were three yakuza gangs that were in this district. One being ours a large assembled group, second being an illegal underground yakuza, and lastly the ocean yakuza. We each have a trespass problem and we each have negotiation once or twice.

We do not do illegal crap, we do not just kill we indeed help. Our sub groups do undercover police jobs. In this Yakuza domain we fight to be top and so far we are winning. And to crush us would be two other groups. They just need to know our weak side and I knew they found mine easily. It was a lethal game, loads die but for me it was just another challenge.

“Where is she?” I growled as I stared at him

“Nowhere, everywhere” he laughed I growled edging closer, I saw the henchmen come closer with the weapons in tow.

“I said where is she!” I bellowed

“Stop coming closer or I won’t hit the bomb” he declared glaring. “Hunter Suzuki a top man in the yakuza domain, is here in front of me wondering where a girl is” he laughed and soon everyone else did.

“Shut up” I said

“Oh but why, I knew a weakness for you will always be a girl! People like you are always so foolish to be running towards something so trivial” he declared “But its good enough for me now we can kill you right here and now and regain the title”

“What title, remember you're still that little pea brain you were in Axels’ sub group” I laughed the man glared hard at me.

“SHUT UP OR ELSE I PRESS IT!” He fumed, I shouldn’t provoke but I need to know where she was.

“Tell me who sent you” I asked curious

“Oh wouldn’t you like to know, It’s someone powerful more powerful than your group” he laughed hysterically, he was slightly annoying me already.

“Who?” I said as I snapped my phone on, I pressed redial and on the first ring I heard quietly Haru’s voice.

“Curious aren’t you well if you must know it’s someone called Sakurano do you know who they are, they are the top of the leader board and they asked me to get rid of you!” He giggled crazily I froze.

The name was familiar, but it didn’t cross my mind who it was. I was still wondering and I hoped the boys heard it too. I heard Riley’s sudden shout of knowing where Blair was, near the far corner a rusty yellow coloured building. I smirked at the men in front of me.

“Good for you, want to see if you can defeat me” I laughed and got into my stance. I didn’t do taekwondo, boxing and muay thai for no reason.

And when they charged, I felt my thirst for a fight ready. I felt the hard knock of the bones rattling. I felt teeth chattering. I was alive again; it has been forever since I shed blood. I was back, the one thing I avoided yet craved for was these fights. I felt a weak punch hit my face, I roundhouse kicked the man in his gut before, I cracked his shin. I butted heads with the man on the side before I broke his chin.

They lay grovelling at my feet, and I smiled at the man. He was frightened no scared. I was pleased.

“Do you know how I shed blood, I will show you Ken” I laughed as I rushed towards him.

I hit him as hard as possible, but for a man his age combat didn’t falter for him. He winded me and I toppled. I got back to hit him on the side, I saw the blood splattering and I smiled. I loved this; I felt my adrenaline pumping through my veins. He lay beneath me bloodied and dirty, I grabbed his collar and breathed in the coppery scent.

“Tell me where she is Ken” I growled

“You won’t find her” he laughed and he lifted his hand and clicked the button before I could stop him.

“NO!” I shouted and punched him as hard as I could. Hearing the bone connect with another I dropped the motionless body.

I got up and rang Haru he grunted and I knew they were fighting. I dropped the phone back in my pocket before I rushed towards the house. It was broken down and I cursed, how would I get in. I barged through the back entrance and rushed around looking for her. Where the hell was she, how long was this bomb going to pop before the time runs out? I panicked; I was worried I knew it was futile to think I wasn’t. But I was and it just reminded me of my mother all over again.

“BLAIR!” I shouted hoping to god she heard me “BLAIR CAN YOU HEAR ME”

Just silence, I was breathing hard. Where was she? My phone rang I picked up hoping there was a clue from the boys.

“She’s under the basement” Riley said breathlessly “Hurry we only got another 30 seconds”

I ran, I rushed downstairs and kicked the door open. The bolt broke and I saw the sun seeping through the darkness. The girl lay with her hair tangled, her clothes half ripped. I cursed a million words; her clothing revealed her torn bra strap and scratch marks. What did they do to her? I growled I was angry.

I rushed towards her and held her head on my arms. She was barely breathing; her mouth I noticed was parched. How long was she like this? She must be feeling sick; I dried patched blood on her arms and finger nails. Her wrists raw and red. I held her close untying her bounded body. She was free, she was with me now. My heart hammered in fear was she alive?

“Blair, can you hear me” I whispered, she didn’t respond. “Blair!” I screamed scared

I heard the beeping noise and I knew it was time to carry her and hide. I panicked. I picked her up, her head lolled on my neck I didn’t feel her breathing. I felt her lips just like sandpaper grazing my neck. I ran out from the basement but I wasn’t quick enough. The whole place rumbled as I hid under a desk.

I covered her body as the broken places fell into pieces. I felt the desk break in two and hit my back I groaned. The pain was nothing but watching the girl, I flew into a frenzy. She wasn’t breathing, I cursed a thousand times. I didn’t want her dead, she didn’t do anything wrong, and she was innocent.

“Hunter” she breathed as she fluttered her eyelids and I held her closer to my chest.

I hope she didn’t hear my heart thundering. She fell back into deep slumber, as I lay holding her watching the dust and rubble around us. She was alive, that was all I cared about.

“I’m sorry” I whispered
