This summer was intense. I met a boy named Jamal, he's absolutely adorable, and sweet.

It's almost midnight on Friday, and we were on FaceTime.

"Do you have any plans this weekend?"

"No. I was hoping me and you could hang out again."

"Of course! How do you feel about treasure hunts?"

"Is this about the Roller World money again?"

"Of course it is! I know it's real, y/n."

"Okay. I'd love to help you look for it." I smiled and stared at him through my phone.

"None of my friends believe me."

"Well for what it's worth, I do."

"For a Brentwood girl, you're really nice."

"Thanks?" I laughed.

"That reminds me, when am I gonna get to meet your friends?"

"Oh, uh... soon. I promise."

I sighed. "Okay." I gave a small smile.

Eventually we both fell asleep while on the phone. I woke up the next morning around 8 and he was still asleep.

I muted myself so I wouldn't wake him up, and got ready for the day.

I noticed he talked in his sleep.

"Y/n... Monse, Ruby... Caesar."

I smiled. He seemed at peace.

After getting my hair curled, Jamal finally woke up and I unmuted myself.

"Good morning." I smiled.

"What time is it?" He asked sleepily.

"About 10:30."

He sprung up quickly. "I have to go, I'm supposed to meet my friends at my dads restaurant in fifteen minutes."

"Okay, have fun, and stay safe."

He hung up and I plugged my phone in to charge.

I went downstairs and saw my dad on a business call. He covered up the phone and spoke to me.

"I need you to go pick up the BBQ for my party. The business card should be on the table."

"Okay. Can I have the debit card?"

He pointed to theta or and I saw it. "I'll be back in a couple hours. I might visit my friend while I'm down there."

"Okay sweetie. Let me know when you get the BBQ."

"I will."

I drove down to Freeridge. I pulled into the BBQ joint and texted dad that I was about to go get it.

I turned the car off and went inside.

After a couple minutes of standing and waiting, someone bumped into me.

"Sorry." I apologized. Why did I apologize?

I thought I recognized her, but I don't think I've ever met her before.

"Watch it, Brentwood." She eyed me up and down.

"Monse, it wasn't her fault." A short Hispanic boy interjected.

It suddenly clicked. "You guys are Jamal's friends. You're ruby, right?" I smiled.

"You know Jamal?"

"Yeah, I'm Y/n." I held out my hand.

She eyed me again. "Like I'm supposed to know who that is?" I slowly put my hand down.

"Sorry, I just thought he might have mentioned me." I cleared my throat awkwardly. Why hadn't he mentioned me to them?

"Ruby, sorry I'm late-"

I looked at Jamal and his eyes widened a bit.

"Y/n, what are you doing here?"

"Picking up an order for my dads business party.. this is your dads place?" I fidgeted with the order card.

"Uh, yeah. Best BBQ in freeridge." He said awkwardly. Monse and Ruby were just staring at our encounter.

"Y/l/n your order is ready for pickup." A man called. "Jamal, help this girl with her order."

I grabbed a couple of trays of BBQ, so did Jamal.

We carried the first load to my car and put them in the back seat.

He went to go back inside but I grabbed his hand.

"Jamal..."

He wouldn't look at me.

"I want you to know that I didn't know this was your dads place. And I didn't know that you didn't tell your friends about whatever we are. Otherwise I wouldn't have said anything to them."

"You're not mad that I didn't tell them about you?"

I sighed. "I'm a little sad that you haven't talked about me to them. I talk about you to my friends all the time. And I don't know why you didn't tell them but I respect your decision not to."

He looked at me. "I didn't tell them because you're from Brentwood."

My eyes started tearing up. "Why does that matter?"

"Ruby told me what monse said to you. I just didn't want her to judge you based on where you live.

"She's probably just having a bad day, right? I mean you talked about her like she was nice and caring."

"She is, most of the time."

"Then I guess I'll just have to meet her again another day... you know, I didn't tell them we were... are we dating?"

He smiled. "Yes. I- I mean if you want to." He got nervous.

I nodded with a smile.

We went inside to get the rest of my order, and Ruby, Cesar and Monse all stared at us, or me.

After loading it up, he officially introduced me to his friends.

"Guys, this is y/n, my girlfriend."

I smiled at him, then them. "Hi."

"You got a girlfriend?" Monse looked surprised.

"And one from Brentwood." Ruby high fived Jamal. Causing me to laugh.

"Sorry about earlier,"

"Don't worry about it. We all have bad days." She smiled and nodded. "Do you wanna sit with us?" Jamal asked.

"I would, but I have to get this BBQ to my dad ASAP."

"Okay. I'll text you later."

"Okay." I smiled, kissed his cheek, and left.

After that day, all five of us became friends. I met Olivia shortly after, and Jasmine just kind of kept showing up. I like her though. She's confident.

On our two month anniversary, Jamal took me on a cute date in his back yard stargazing.

"Jamal." I said quietly.

"Hm?"

"I love you." I looked at him to see how he would react. He only turned to me and smiled. "I love you too."
