i wish i understood emotions
you've been by my side since the beginning
i don't even know who i would be
if i never met you
you were always the one who stayed with me
when we had petty arguments
with our fake friends
who would leave us for popularity
you always came to me
to help me
and for me to help you

it wasn't until recently
that i realized how important you are to me
that the stars aren't just in your last name
they're also in the sparkle in your eyes
and in your wide smile
i look to you
as we dance with our friend
under the starry night dance
you looked beautiful
a slow song played
and i wished we could have moved from the crowd
to dance as a couple
instead of as a group

we pulled away eventually
the loud music and bright lights were hurting
so i took you towards the back
where we laughed
and made fun of how neither of us could dance
until we needed to get water
you always did know how to make me laugh
whether we are reliving our history
or giggling at the people around us
or just talking about funny things that happened

i live for rehearsal with you every week
where we get to pretend we're in love
where we almost got so into the moment
that you almost reached for my hand
and sent butterflies through my stomach
but the feeling scared me at first
and i was stupid to reject
the only time we'd break character
where we forget who we're supposed to be
is when we start laughing
and telling each other cute funny stories
and then get yelled at for it

maybe you're just my best friend
and i'm just confused as to how i feel
because what if we're too close to ever be together
but to me
you'll always be the brightest most beautiful star
to guide me to happiness
and maybe that will be found in you
