"AHH! Don't you dare run away from me you evil warlock!" Matthew chanted while standing in a defensive crouch with his fake wand pointed at Draco. "You're no match for me silly boy." Draco scoffed in an evil posh voice, "I'm the most powerful warlock in the world, you can't ever beat me."
I watched in utter happiness as my 2 boys played whatever game that was. They were bonding so well, and that's all I ever hoped for as a little girl. To have a happy family, to be kind and supportive towards each other. Matthew had ended up defeating the evil warlock, I left before they realized I was watching and I casted a re-heating charm on the food.
When they came in they sat down at the table panting as if they had run a marathon. "What you you guys doing?" I raised an eyebrow when they gave each other a subtle look as if they made a silent agreement to not tell me. "Nothing, Mama" Matthew sweetly smiled and began eating his food, muttering about how good it was.
"So, bud, what do you want to do today?"
Well, we ended up going to a muggle zoo, much to Draco's protest. He says that he doesn't get why muggles pay money to see a bunch of dirty animals. Of course Matthew had to argue back and say it was because they were cool. "Wait, let's take a picture!" I cheered while taking out my camera. We needed to get in a few more pictures before it was too late, we had already almost filled the entire baby book.
Surprisingly they stayed quiet and didn't complain about it like they normally do, which I was very grateful for. I had gotten the occasional giggles from Matthew when Draco would make a silly face at the camera.
He really is a great father.
"Oooh, can we go to the gorillas?" He let us do large area that had all the gorillas. "Look, Mama, that looks like dad when he's grumpy!"
He pointed to a gorilla with grunting and throwing stuff around. I was laughing so hard that I needed clutched my stomach from the pain. "You're right, Matty, that does look like your dad when he's grumpy."
Draco had a sour expression on his face and was mumbling to himself about us being 'traitors' and that it wasn't true.
"Awww don't be upset, dad," Matthew patted his arm, "You're still the greatest dad a kid could ever have." The look on Draco's face said it all, that was the one thing he has always wanted to hear when becoming a dad. I saw the tears glistening in his eyes as he pulled Matthew into a tight hug.
I watched in awe at the moment, he really is the best dad and I don't understand why he had ever thought he wouldn't be. Yeah, his dad was not the best role model, but he was the perfect example of what not to do. I think that's why Draco is so good at parenting, because he is giving Matthew everything that he never got as a kid.
"I love you, son, so much. Never forget that. Your mother and I are so proud of you, everyday." He pulled me into the hug and we all just stood in each other's embrace at the gorilla exhibit, not caring about the watchful eyes of others. "You guys mean the world to me".
After the fun day at the zoo we took him to get some ice cream, he especially enjoyed the part where we told him he could get whatever he wanted.
"Uhh" he whined while pushing his empty ice cream bowl away. "I don't feel so good" I don't feel good either, we only have one more hour until the class starts.
I had been trying to not think too much about it and just enjoy the day, but it's hard when there is a constant reminder in the back of my head. The slightly dull ache in my heart that only seems to get worse as the minutes tick by. I can only imagine that Draco feels the same way, maybe worse.
The final place we took him was to the house. Draco and I had decorated a room for him and him only, we wanted him to see it. "I love it!" he cheered as he ran around the room. It was like any other bedroom, we had added a million toys that he had told us about during our short time together.
This room no one will be allowed to go in. It is his, only for him to see.
"We're so glad you love it, baby" I smiled weakly at the sight of my first born playing with all of the toys that he could. I tried to play it off but the pain had become almost unbearable, the excruciating feeling threatening to make me collapse on the floor and never get up. But he doesn't need to know that, he doesn't need to see me sad, that won't help anything.
We silently watched as he analyzed everything, testing out the big bed that we had put in. I'm glad that we could at least make sure that he had a good childhood, we provided a loving happy home for him, we gave him whatever we could.
'Beep Beep Beep'
Draco and I looked at each other with dread. It's time to go.
"Hey, bud" Draco called to Matthew while gently grabbing his hand to apparate us back. "It's time to go back to school now." "Aww but I was having fun, dad." He whined but was immediately silenced when we stood in front of the school, guess he gets his motion sickness from me.
We silently and anxiously walked to the classroom. "Matthew" I called to him and bent down to reach his height, "I want you to know that you're such an amazing kid. Okay?" He nodded and smiled at me, "I know that, Mama" Draco also bent down, "We love you so much, you never failed to make us proud, you're such a good kid." He smiled again and wrapped his arms around us.
I steadily breathed in, taking in his scent, the smell of apples and honey. He loves using that kind of shampoo. "I love you guys too, you are the best parents ever!"
"Alright everyone, time to step inside." The marriage teacher called out and opened the doors. Everyone was waiting outside with their kids, they were in the same situation as us, they felt the strong attachment towards their kids.
I took a shaky breath and looked at Draco, "Time to go."
