Everything that we want
is downstream . . . And
you don't even have to
turn the boat and paddle
downstream, just let go
of the oars, the current
will carry you.

~ Esther Hicks, on Oprah & Friends

So it is with our word, our
treatment, our prayer, our
affirmation. It operates in a
larger field and is operated
upon by a Supreme Law. This
is why we can have faith in it
and patiently, cheerfully, and
expectantly await the outcome,
knowing that as a man sows,
so shall he also reap.

~ Ernest Holmes

How does 'metaphysics' do the work that it does ? We do not make things "happen" as a result of our beliefs but we create the form, the mold, so that they can be allowed to happen. We do not send our thought "out" to do the things that we wish to see accomplished. We do not have to overcome external opposition. In fact, I would affirm that resistance and opposition are often the way that The Universe tries to tell us we are upon a wrong path. Can there really be a wrong path ? Every path accomplishes something - even if that thing that it accomplishes is more accurately a lesson for us in futility, than a success in getting whatever it is we thought we wanted.

We do not try to coerce anything. We would be faced with a totally impossible task, if that was what we had to do. Instead, what we are doing is aligning our own selves with the laws of nature, so that a totally natural outcome unfolds for us. As Abraham-Hicks likes to say, we allow ourselves to be carried by the current of Life downstream, rather than fighting our way upstream against that current. Mike Dooley likes to say that we let The Universe take care of the "cursed how's". What we do is to simply keep in mind the destination we are seeking. As we wait, we hold in our heart lightly the imagined experience, bringing up the very best result regarding how we will actually be FEELING, when we achieve what we are capable of mentally believing in. We think about what it will be like when we get to our destination. How we feel about that, moment to moment, is all that really matters in the final analysis. Therefore, Dooley recommends we really simplify our desires to reflect a feeling state, something similar to "happiness", and allow The Universe to deliver that to us in the very best way. There is only delight, if we are awed by what unfolds, as we witness the natural magic that then happens for us.

So, we are born into a set of circumstances. From there, we must set out upon the path of Life. Initially, we are given instructions by our parents, our schools, our society via the media and our churches on "how" Life will "work" for us - as long as we cooperate with the "rules" we have been taught during our childhood, about the way Life operates. However, as we mature we sometimes discover that someone or something has sought to play a huge prank upon us. They have taught us ways that lead to our feeling trapped and enslaved by Life, instead of feeling empowered by it.

That is how learning about the Science of Mind philosophy began to teach me to float upon the current of the river of Life, instead of struggling against the upstream current of reality, by trying to force my will upon it. Ernest Holmes offers an analogy of a farmer planting a seed. He explains to us that in doing so the farmer is cooperating with the laws of nature that tell him that placing the seed into the soil will allow a Universal process that he can depend upon to begin to operate and that the result, as long as all the conditions are cooperating with the farmer's expectations, will be the plant that he is expecting to grow. He does not plant a tomato seed and expect to receive an ear of corn.

So every individual expresses itself in acts of conscious willfulness, selecting from a variety of choices, the direction in which they wish to travel. What the individual is doing is individualizing the Universal field of creative reaction. There is a "law" that is expressed as "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction" but what does that mean in the context of what we are considering here ? It means that if you push against something (the action) then something else will push against you (the opposite reaction) and that is why we don't try to paddle upstream.

The Universal does what it does as us, through us and in us. Holmes said "nature obeys us when we obey it". The Laws of Spirit, the way that the Universal is able to creatively express Itself, are operating in the realm of a natural Law and Order. We all accept the action of the gravitational force that keeps us attached to the Earth and able to move around upon it. We also understand the laws of gravity well enough that we can launch heavy vehicles up off of the Earth to travel more quickly through space and with less resistance. Metaphysics teaches us how to cooperate in unity with the natural laws of Life's unfolding, while at the same time releasing us from being bound forever to unhappy, undesirable or difficult circumstances. Our understanding allows us to use our knowledge of how this works to travel more quickly and with less resistance to that feeling place that is our desired destination.

I understand the ways of creation
that allow me to individualize the
Universal into the forms that I mold
with my deepest beliefs regarding
the nature of Life.
I know that these Laws of Spirit
operate in a totally impartial way
so that my beliefs about Life
out-picture for me perfectly in the
way I choose to perceive them.
I have learned how to plant my
seeds into the creative medium of
expression.
My successes and my failures help
me to develop a more expert skill
at applying these laws to my very
life's experiences.
When I see the activity of Source
as It expresses through my chosen
desires I am made happy in the
knowledge that I am the recipient
of Life's blessings and I never need
to feel that I am a victim of circumstances.
