"Grab your gear." Gibbs said, joining his three agents in the bullpen and disrupting their conversation about McGee's dinner with his girlfriend. "We got a dead marine and a dead air force consultant."
When they arrived to the crime scene, Metro PD had already secured the scene. The Sergeant on scene directed them to the bodies, yet none of them noticed Tony halting in his tracks.
"Ann." Tony breathed out in horror. "Oh my god." The two victims were definetly staged, their throats slashed and one of them appear to be in full Marine dress uniform while the other in a beautiful red dress that stopped at the knee. Gibbs turned back to find his senior agent and start barking orders, yet stopped upon seeing the ghostly pale look on his face and pure pain and horror in his eyes.
"DiNozzo." Gibbs barked, looking between the two bodies and his agent. "You know these two?" Tony snapped his eyes away from Ann, making eye contact with Gibbs.
"Boss, that's my wife." Tony's voice cracked, and Gibbs looked horrified.
"Ah hell."
Tony was in no condition to process the crime scene, so Gibbs wrapped a shock blanket around him and made him sit at the back of the ME van, but his head was spinning, unable to believe it.
"Tony." He looked up at Gibbs, who looked sympathetic.
"Can i have her tags?" Tony asked, even in spite of the protocols. Gibbs merely produced an evidence bag and handed it to Tony. He stared at the tags, a little bloody along with her wedding ring that she kept around the chain. "Oh."
"You know i have to ask, Tony." He merely nodded. "When was the last time you saw Major Ann Teldy?"
"Last night." Tony said distractedly, still looking at the tags. "I- my chest was giving me bother last night. So i called Dr Pitt who told me to stay indoors, use my inhaler and get an early night. I was supposed to accompany Annie to the presidential dinner for the senior staff of her classifified program." Tony sniffed, blinking tears out his eyes. "Her Commanding Officer, Lt Colonel John Sheppard and XO, Major Evan Lorne, picked her up in a limo at 2045. She and the XO, Major Lorne, share duties on base. She'd only been home for 2 days, boss. I only see her 4 weeks outta the year."
"You couldn't have known Tony." Gibbs stated with sympathy. "Do you know the woman with her?"
"Y-yeah." Tony nodded. "That's CMO Doctor Jennifer Keller. She's in charge of the medical treatments on base. She is- was engaged to CSO Doctor Rodney McKay. They attended the dinner together last night."
"Do you know how i can contact Doctor McKay?"
"I'll call them." Tony whispered. "It'll go better coming from me."
"I'm gonna drive you back to the Navy Yard, then i want you to take the rest of the day."
"Boss-"
"I know, Tony." Gibbs assured him. "I'll keep you in the loop and call you the minute i have something."
"Alright."
Tony decided the best place to make the call to General O'Neill would be in Abby's lab.
"Hey Abs." Tony greeted, though his tone was less enthusiastic. "Can i use your office to make a secure phone call." Abby placed both hands on his shoulders, looking him dead in the eye.
"You can have whatever you need." She said determinedly.
"Thanks Abby."
"Hello?"
"General O'Neill? This is Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo Jr with NCIS. I was hoping for a moment of your time."
"Anything for the navy cops." Jack said, though Tony could easily tell he hated anything related to cops.
"At 0735 this morning, Major Ann Teldy and Doctor Jennifer Keller were found dead in DC." Tony hated how weak his voice sounded. Jack swore.
"You're Ann's Tony, aren't you?"
"Yes sir."
"My condolences." Jack offered. "What can we do to assist you?"
"Uhm, my Boss will want to talk to Sheppard, Lorne and McKay." Tony explained. "We have to establish a last sighting for Ann and Keller and create our suspect list."
"Of course." Jack waved over his assistant, covering the microphone for a moment. "Davis, call Sheppard and have him round up all expedition members who were at the dinner last night. Is it alright if we send them your way Agent DiNozzo?"
"Of course, General." Tony agreed. "Agent Gibbs is conducting interviews tomorrow. I'd like to notify Doctor McKay myself if that's alright, General?"
"Of course. He, Keller, Sheppard and Lorne are staying at the Adams House. Rooms 216 and 217."
"Thank you, General O'Neill."
"Once again, my condolences Agent DiNozzo."
Tony made it to the Adam's House Hotel with little bother, deciding it best to leave his car at the Navy Yard since he was in no emotional state to be aloud behind the wheel of a car. He bypassed reception and headed straight up for the second floor, and mere moments later he found himself outside 217. He knocked in spite of the do not disturb sign, and was greeted the sight of a very messy haired man without a shirt and several discoloured bruises - hickeys - on his neck and chest.
"You must be Colonel Sheppard." Tony couldn't help the chuckle. "Ann always described you as a messy haired pilot."
"You must be Agent DiNozzo." John grumbled, yawning. "O'Neill said to expect you. Come on in." Tony followed John into the hotel room, and he automatically surveyed the room. Two queen beds - only one slept in -, a half eaten breakfast and several items of clothing laying on the floor. The shower was running, and there was a sketchbook on the table beside one of the beds along with a set of very expensive pencils.
"I'm sorry to disturb you on your day off, Colonel." Tony began.
"Call me John." He interupted as he pulled on a shirt.
"John." Tony amended. "But i'm afraid i have to tell you bad news." John looked at Tony warily, and then it was like he just noticed Ann wasn't with him.
"Where's Teldy?" John asked slowly.
"At 0735 hours this morning, Major Ann Teldy of the USAF was found dead in a forestry area in DC. Unfortunately, along with Major Teldy's body, we found Doctor Jennifer Keller, the Chief Medical Officer of your base." John looked pale, and he sat down at the end of the unused bed. Tony sounded monotone, and John could understand why. God knows how many times he's had to say that today.
"Does McKay know?" John asked, and Tony shook his head.
"I wanted to be the one to tell him." Tony confessed. John nodded his head, the shower shutting off in the bathroom.
"Make yourself comfortable, Tony." John gestured to the table filled with breakfast. "Help yourself. I have to talk to Evan."
"Of course."
McKay appeared to be a little disgruntled when John practically dragged him from his hotel room.
"Why are you dragging me Sheppard?" Rodney snapped. "I'm more than capable of walking."
"I'm well aware of that Rodney." John sassed right back, pulling him into the hotel room and closing the door. "But we have bigger problems right now."
"Whats happened?" Rodney asked wearily, only then noticing the sad look on John's face and the practically falling apart Fed sitting at the table with his head in his hands with Evan sitting next to him, a hand on his shoulder comfortingly.
"Ann and Jennifer were found dead this morning, Rodney." John said quietly, and Rodney rapidly paled.
"N-no. That's- i just saw her last night!" Rodney protested, shaking his head adamantly. "T-they went for a drink!"
"I saw it myself, Doctor McKay." The Fed said quietly, and Rodney recognised him from the pictures Ann had shown them all on movie night once. A picture of him sat on her desk, and she always had a photo of them together when on missions.
"No." Rodney whispered.
"I'm so sorry, Rodney." John then did something he very rarely did, and pulled Rodney into a hug. And Rodney did something even more unlike him and burst into tears, sobbing into the Colonel's shirt and clinging on. John knew damn well how much Rodney had loved Jennifer, the woman had been the one, according to Rodney.
"Doctor McKay." Tony said slowly, standing up from the table. He'd pulled a carefully constructed mask into place, one that the three other men knew would only hold for so long before it shattered. "I want to promise you i'll do everything in my power to find whoever is responsible for this."
"Ann always spoke so highly of you." Rodney said, wiping his face and pulling away from John's shoulder. He turned to face Tony. "She used you as an example to whip the scientists into shape last year."
"Yeah, i know. I gave her the idea." Tony remembered emailing back and forth in a chat with several marines and officers, finally working out a way to get all scientists field-capable without killing them.
"I believe you'll find them."
"Thank you."
They found the guys responsible 4 days later. Turns out both Ann and Jennifer knew them, as they'd all served together with O'Neill's classified project a few years earlier. Tony could tell though that the stares he was getting from the rest of his team that they were wondering when he was going to cry, because his wife had died 5 days ago and he hadn't shed one tear yet. Ann didn't have any family left, so Tony was soley responsible for making all the arrangements the Air Force didn't cover. But Tim and Ziva hadn't let him do it alone, and had made all the floral arrangements and organised the wake perfectly. It was scheduled for another 2 days time, so Tony took the time to escape all the looks and hid from everyone, not that it surprised anyone.
Gibbs was in the basement the morning of Ann's funeral when Tony came down the stairs, and he was clearly hung over.
"Did it help?" Gibbs asked, referring to the drinking.
"No." Tony shook his head, sighing. Gibbs put down the sandpaper and walked over to where his agent was slumped against the worktop, looking miserable.
"When are you going to grieve, Tony?" Gibbs asked, a hand pressed against Tony's neck.
"When its really sunk in." Tony admitted, refusing to make eye contact. "I don't think it has, quite yet."
"Well when you do, i'll be right here." Gibbs promised.
"Thanks boss." Tony smiled, because he knew that when he did finally break down, Gibbs would be right there to pick up the pieces and help him.
