Once upon a time, there was a hapless man named Russell. His occupation is a veterinarian. ...Maybe he liked animals a bit too much.

The zombie apocalypse did not kill him, but let him come to the future beastman world, he then started to work as a contract beast breeder.

One day, he picked up a wolf, then the wolf became a human, and he was eaten, 囧ORZ...

Impressions: The synopsis can be misleading. It isn't completely serious, but it isn't completely full of laughs either...

So our MC was a veterinarian, then came the apocalypse, he got the power to form contracts with animals and 'upgrade' them. Laters, he died and transmigrated into a future world. It isn't completely a Beastman world, its a world of humans and contract beasts. There are 3 types. One is a Soul Beast (?), they can transform into an animal or use its powers. (ML is like this) Then, there are those that can 'fit' with their beast, like they would get their beast's characteristic when they use it and become more powerful. Then there are those that can just form contracts with beasts but cannot combine with them or use their powers. MC falls into this one.

MC transmigrates as a gloomy middle son. Except for the big brother, MC's family doesn't really play a big role. MC's parents just play soysauce and MC's younger brother becomes a small villain at the start, bullying the original. MC quickly packs him up.

MC stays in character for awhile, that is gloomy and not talkative, before slowly showing his real personality. Only in front of beast/animals, MC will show his gentle side. ML meets MC when he's feeding the contract beast. He was at wolf form then. MC has no resistance to this wolf form cos his former partner during the apocalypse was a wolf. Then began ML (in wolf form) courtship. Only MC isn't familiar with the customs here so he doesn't get the meaning (plus he thought ML was a wolf!!!). MC's teacher decides to play matchmaker and finally they meet for real (in human form). The first part is mostly MC's life at school, secretly upgrading contract beast (he still has his powers in the last life), daily life with his roommates (They're a riot. XD), meeting ML in human or wolf form etc. etc.  MC eventually discovered that ML & wolf is the same person.

Then there are rumors of Qilin, a legendary soul beast that's supposed to bring prosperity to the Alliance (This is a flag!) MC doesn't care. His classmate comes out as a Qilin candidate. Laters, MC & the military discovers that MC is the Qilin but MC doesn't want to 'wake up' Qilin and even suppressed it using his mental powers. For MC, being Qilin has too much pressure, he just wants to live peacefully with ML and contract beasts (they're together now btw.) Classmate is pitiful at first cos the military is using him as cannonfodder to hide MC, but he started getting more and more ambitious(?), using his Qilin identity everywhere. He even started hating on MC cos MC is better than him even though he's the Qilin!!! (Slowly lost my sympathy). Then the disgusting politics arc(?) cos some radicals want to force MC to wake up Qilin. Then they killed a bunch of contract beasts to use their blood to stimulate MC. MC is MAAADDD cos he really cares for the little pets (me too!!! asdfghjkl!!!!) MC summons all the upgraded beasts to counterattack. (Kill! Kill!) then he goes away to build a new country where there are only contract beasts. This is where he finally realized that he really LOVES ML cos only ML can make him feel reluctant to leave, but in the end, he still left (he gave back ML's ring).

ML follows MC to his new country (in wolf form so MC can't refuse him) Laters, some of the upgraded beasts became humans!! (their final evolution) Then a prophet came saying that this was all supposed to happen blah blah blah and the blood was fake blood, not contract beast blood etc. etc. but MC is not convinced cos the point is that the military still tried to force MC to awaken. In the end, ML discovered that MC has a spiritual(?) problem. He doesn't trust humans so he invests himself too much on the contract beasts. The contract beasts are pure/simple unlike humans. MC also knows he has a problem cos he knows that contract beasts really wants to be useful to humans, they don't really wish for freedom. (House elves? Lol). MC just doesn't want them to be abused. He also knows he just wants redemption for the animals that he betrayed during the apocalypse in his past life. (Sometimes sacrificing them to save humans). ML promises that he would make the Alliance a place where MC's concern won't happen. It wasn't mentioned how ML did it, but fast forward and MC & ML are finally together.

Extras is MC giving birth to two little buns. One is in wolf form and the second one is human. The second son is actually the Qilin!! Cos he never awakened, he had no choice but to make do with a baby body. MC asks if he possessed his son but Qilin says that he was his son from beginning to end. But MC still dislikes him!! Lol. ML just thought that MC still has special favoritism for beast types so he pities his human form son. Lol. (MC didn't tell him their son was Qilin). Laters, Qilin became closer to ML cos he thinks that ML is pitiful and they are comrades living under MC's tyrant rule. Lololol.

Other extras are the side CPs.. MC's big bro and his bestfriend-turned-wife (most unfortunate guy in the whole novel. Lololol) and MC's bestfriend x a former villain who wanted to kill MC. Also the life of their little buns~~

Overall, I like the pacing. It never got too dark for me. When things get too serious, MC or ML's roommates are there to lighten the mood. I was kinda hoping to see them in the Extras :/ MC and ML's interactions are cute, but they're too lacking EQ (Both of them!!) so sometimes it kinda felt that they were just going with the flow (But MC properly realized it. And ML also said it, although just once) so I'm not lacking in sugar, but yep, agreed with Qilin, ML is too pitiful, (too loyal dog!) MC should take care of him more~~~ ^_^ The world setting is interesting with the soul beast etc, although the politics later disgusted me (bleh!), but the counterattack is also satisfying.
