BOOK: Her

AUTHOR: Harriet Lane

GENRE: Thriller

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: You don't remember her—but she remembers you.

On the face of it, Emma and Nina have very little in common. Isolated and exhausted by early motherhood, Emma finds her confidence is fading fast. Nina—sophisticated, generous, effortlessly in control—seems to have all the answers.

It's easy to see why Emma is drawn to Nina. But what does Nina see in her?

A seemingly innocent friendship slowly develops into a dangerous game of cat and mouse as Nina eases her way into Emma's life. Soon, it becomes clear that Nina wants something from the unwitting Emma—something that might just destroy her.

REVIEW: I don't think that blurb accurately sums up the tone of the book. From that description you'd think it was an action-packed book with murder and deception, and what you get is a slightly limper, tamer version of that. I bought this book because I thought it was going to be an epic thriller, and while I wasn't totally disappointed, it wasn't really an epic thriller.

It gave me mad 'Girl on the Train' vibes throughout because of the split narration, but also just the way it was written was very much like that book. There was this increasing sense that Emma had done something really bad to Nina when they were younger, hence why Nina is mad and wants to ruin Emma's life. I don't want to give spoilers here but Nina's reasoning for being angry and spiteful towards Emma is COMPLETELY PETTY AND STUPID. I thought Emma had like killed Nina's family or something but nooooooo.

Anyway, the writing was pretty good, and it was an easy read after having a tough time really getting my teeth into previous reads.

FINAL VERDICT: A disappointing end, but the book was fairly standard and enjoyable.
