Chapter Forty-Five

Chapter 45

Jess POV

“You so let me win” I mutter as we walk outside to his car

“No, you were just that good”

“You’re such a terrible liar” I say laughing a bit as I get in and put my seat belt on

“What do you want to do now?”

“Uh, well it’s almost dinner time….” I say as I look over and smile up at Jack

“Yeah, what does that mean?”

“That means that we should eat food”

“Oh yeah? What do you want to eat?”

“Anything besides hospital food” I say and a cringe just thinking about that terrible food.

Jack laughs a bit and nods “Sounds good. Do you want me to cook for you?”

“I would love it if you cooked for me” I say smiling as I lean over and kiss his cheek and he turns his neck so my lips connect with his. I smile and kiss him sweetly.

Buzz Buzz Buzz

“Hold that thought” I say and I reach into my back pocket and pull out my phone. “Hi Mom” I say and Jack laughs a bit.

“Hi honey, I need you to come home and babysit Gabe tonight.”

“Uh, okay. I’ll be home in like a half an hour. Is it cool if Jack comes with?”

“Yes that’s fine. Oh and you have to feed Gabriel dinner as well.”

“That’s perfect, because Jack just kindly offered to cook us both dinner” I say and I look over at Jack and he just smiles and nods. His hands start roaming my body. One on my now exposed hip and the other approaching my stomach. I look at him ‘don’t you dare’ I mouth as he begins to tickle me and I start laughing and squirming.

“Okay mom, we’ll be home soon.” I say and I hang up and hit Jack’s chest

“I hate you” I mutter and he chuckles

“No you don’t”

“Yeah, I sort of do”

“Impossible” He mutters against my lips and I pull away

“No kisses for Jack” I say smiling and I put my seat belt back on. “To my house!”

“Yes mam” He mutters and I can’t help but laugh a bit as we drive to my house.

We pull into my driveway and get out walking to the front door.

“You are a terrible singer” Jack says as I open the door

“I am a terrific singer, thank you very much!” I retort as I jump on the couch, landing on my bad arm. “Shit!” I yell and I roll off the couch.

“That’s what you get for being reckless” Jack says as he walks over and sits down on the recliner.

“Fuck off” I mutter and I get up and walk into the kitchen for some ice and pain killers.

“Oh come on babe! I was just kidding” Jack yells. I roll my eyes and slam the cabinet doors looking for those pain killers from the doctor.

“Where are my pills?!”

Jack POV

“Where are my pills!?” Jess yells as she slams the cabinet doors. I make my way into the kitchen and walk over to her.

“Babe, you need to calm down. This is not helping your concussion any” I say and she looks at me.

“Then find my fucking pills” Whoa, my girl has a mouth on her!

“Cursing at me won’t find your pills” I say calmly as I begin to look for the pills.

“Whatever Jack” She mutters and storms upstairs. I follow her and she walks into her parents’ bathroom and finds the pills. I hand her a glass of water and she smiles sheepishly at me and downs the meds.

“Better?”

“I will be” She says and I look up at her

“Come here” I whisper and wrap my arms around her carefully “I know it sucks being hurt, and I know it’s not fair that you always are, but everything will get better”

“I’m such a wimp”

“No, you’re one of the strongest people I have ever met”

“You’re just saying that” She says and I hold her at arm’s length and wipe the tears from under her eyes

“No, I mean it. Ever since I’ve met you, I’ve noticed how independent you are and how mature you are for your age. You don’t let anyone get in your way or stop you and I truly admire that.” I say truthfully

“Thanks” She says and a new set of tears start rolling down her cheeks.

“Jess, don’t cry.”

“I can’t help it. I’m sorry I’m such a bitch sometimes.”

“Hey, we all have our days” I whisper and hold her close again

“I love you, Jack Morris”

“Not as much as I love you” I say and we walk back downstairs just as her mom leaves. Jess goes from being so upset to this happy go lucky person, putting on an act as Gabe walks into the living room

“Hey, bud. Jack is going to make us dinner tonight.”

“Really?” He asks and looks up at me. God this kid is freaking adorable! He has Jess’ eyes, you can totally tell they are related.

“Really, little man. What do you want me to make?”

“Dino chicken!”

I chuckle a bit “What?”

“It’s chicken nuggets shaped like dinosaurs” Jess says and I smile and nod

“Okay, how about that and some of my famous mac and cheese?”

“Yay!’ Gabe yells and I smile. Wow kids are so easy to impress. I get working on dinner as Jess and Gabe are in the living room playing video games. I can’t help but think of how great of a mother she is going to make.

“Dinner’s ready” I whisper in Jess’ ear and I feel her jump a bit and I chuckle

“Why do you do that?!” She asks and I smile and shrug

“I like keeping you on your toes” I say and she smiles and rolls her eyes

“Whatever you say, Mr. Morris.”

I can’t help but groan “Babe, you haven’t called me that in almost a month. Why start now?”

“That’s what you get for making me jump” She says smiling and we eat dinner. All three of us; together, like a little family.

I wake up with my arm around Jess as she sleeps with her head on my chest, I can’t help but admire her.

Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!

Shit! Where is my phone? I look around trying not to wake her up. Ah Ha! I say to myself as I find it under my pillow.

I carefully move her head onto my pillow and get out of the bed.

“This better be important” I mutter

“Whoa man, relax” Jared says “I just wanted to let you know that the trip is booked and we leave the last week of August.”

“That’s perfect. Jess should be just about healed by then. Thanks man”

“No problem.
