Chapter 40

Jess POV

“How does this look?”

“Oh sweetie you look amazing” My mom says as I walk out of the dressing room in a potential graduation dress.

“Yeah? It’s not too frilly?”

“Honey, you look beautiful.”

“Thanks Ma. So is this the one?”

“I think it is. What do you think?”

“Yeah, I guess so.”

I get changed and I walk over to the register to pay for it.

“So how about I treat you to a nice lunch?”

“Oh, you don’t have to do that Mom.”

“You’re my only daughter and you’re leaving me in two months. I’m buying you lunch”

I laugh a little and nod “Fine. Where do you want to go?”

“Ruby Tuesdays?”

“Sounds good to me”

The two of us walk to the food court in the mall and over to the quaint little restaurant in the corner. We immediately get seated and start making small talk.

“So how are you and Jack?”

I shrug my shoulders a bit “I’m not really sure, I guess”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, we have both been pretty busy and distant. I just want to focus on graduation”

“Jess, what happened?”

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you Ma”

“Try me”

“When he was younger he signed a document saying he would marry his ex by the  time he turned 26”

I look up at my mom and she has shock and sympathy written all over her face.

“Mom?”

“I’m sorry honey. Is this real?”

“I wish I was kidding.”

“Are you guys trying to work it out?”

“Mom, honestly I have no idea. He’s the adult, he’ll figure it out.”

“Jess, you can’t just let him figure it out.”

“Why? He got himself into the mess.”

“Well maybe you guys should figure it out now.”

“What?” I ask and my mom starts smiling.

“Here’s money for lunch. Try to be civil” She says and gets up

“Good afternoon, Chelsea.”

“Hello, Jack. She’s all yours.”

I turn around and I see my mom talking to Jack. “Mom, I hate you.” I say and the two of them laugh

“Love you two, honey. Be good”

I roll my eyes and she leaves and Jack sits down.

“How have you been?”

“Pretty shitty.” I say and my eyes meet his.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry about all of this. It’s been a rough few weeks.”
