Chapter 16 Football. Bruises. Headaches
The game starts and Jack and I sit down. Tom is the starting Senior Quarterback. Throughout the game old friends of Jack’s come over and talk for a while, as well as some of Tom’s schoolmates.
“Well aren’t you just Mr. Popular”
“Oh please, they are just people I’ve grown up with. No Biggy”
“Yeah, yeah, alright. And explain all of the teenage girls that have come over, to just say hi” I say, laughing a little and Jack looks completely flustered.
“Those are Tom’s friends, not mine. I don’t go for girls like that.”
“You mean, teenage girls?”
“Yeah, uh no. Jess that’s not what I meant…”
“Then what did you mean, Jack?”
“I meant, I don’t date immature girls. Besides, you are the only one for me”
I smile and nod “Now that is a better answer.” I say and I pat his chest, laughing a little.
“You like seeing me sweat like that, don’t you?”
“You mean, like seeing you squirm?”
“Yes, exactly!”
I laugh a little and nod. “I just like to see how creative you can be with your answers.”
“I hate you”
“No you don’t, you just said that I am the only one for you, Jack Morris.”
“You got me there.” Jack says smiling as he puts his arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him. “Since I gave you my jacket, you have to keep me warm.”
“Not a problem”
The game goes on and it’s halftime. Tom is winning by a field goal. Everyone is watching the band and cheerleaders perform.
“So what’s on the agenda for the rest of our weekend?”
“Hmm I was thinking, we could get up early tomorrow morning and see the sun rise on the beach?”
“Hmmm, who would’ve known that Jack Morris was such the romantic?”
“I have my moments”
”That you do, pretty boy. That you do.” He chuckles a bit and the second half starts. Tom and his team end up winning by two touchdowns. Everyone storms the field, cheering and yelling. Jack and I get up and walk down to the fenced off field and Tom walks over with his arm around one of the cheerleaders shoulders. I smile.
“Good game, Tom” I say and the cheerleader gives me a nasty look. Jack chuckles a bit. I can feel his chest vibrating on my back, since I am in between the fence and him. I nudge him with my elbow.
“Hmmph, babe that hurt”
“Suck it up, pretty boy.” I smile back at Jack and he kisses my cheek.
“So Tommy boy, nice game. I didn’t know you were that good.” Jack says to his brother.
“Uh thanks. Mom didn’t tell you? I got a full ride to South Carolina.”
“Wow. No mom didn’t say anything to me. But congrats dude, you’re really growing up, aren’t ya?”
Tom smiles and nods and the little blonde cheerleader on Tom’s shoulder coughs a little.
“Oh guys, this is Rachel. Rachel this is my older brother, Jack and his girlfriend, Jess”
“Hi”
