“Yeah, you don’t need to remind me.”
“But I think I have a plan.”
“Are you going to share?” I ask, slightly annoyed.
“Yes, but first, what happened? When I picked you up at the reservoir and we went for dinner, you were willing to give me another chance. And now, you’re acting like you hardly know me.”
“What do you want me to do, Jack? Do you think this is easy for me?” I ask and I look up at him
“I want you to be honest with me.”
“What more can I say?”
“Do you want to be with me?”
“Jack. You know what we have, is like nothing I could ever find again.”
“And…?”
“And I’m 18. I mean, do normal couples fight as much as we did?”
“Did?”
“Do, sorry”
“So, you don’t want to be with me anymore?”
“Jack, it’s not that. It’s the fact that we cannot stay in consistent agreement with each other. We have so much in common that it tears us apart.”
“What are you trying to say?”
“What do you want me to say?”
“You know what I want you to say, Jess”
“And you know what I want you to say, Jack” I say, now leaning back in my chair.
“Oh, the plan. I figured out that if we can find Lisa a man just as messed up as her, then I’ll be free to date anyone I want.”
“It took you a month to figure that one out, Jack?”
“Hey, no need for the sass, Ms. Hogan.”
“Some teacher you are” I say, smiling a bit. Jack chuckles and nods
“Touché.”
“Do you know any guys that would be good for her?” I ask, as I take a bite of my sandwich.
“I might.”
“Who?!”
‘Do you know, Mr. Stevenson?”
“The Music teacher?”
“That’s him”
“You think your crazy ex and him will hit it off?”
Jack chuckles a bit and nods “Yeah, I think it’ll work. But we have to be subtle about it.”
I nod “So how do you want to go about it?”
“Well she seems to hate you for some reason, so if she sees you or hears that you’re with Mr. Stevenson then hopefully she’ll leave me for him.”
“Jack, we have like 2 weeks until graduation, it has to be faster than that.”
“Okay, uh I don’t know.”
“Have you talked to your lawyer friend?”
“He’s on a business trip.”
I look at Jack “I have to go Jack.”
“What? Why?”
I stand up and look down at him. “You want to know why? Because I feel like this is a one sided relationship, now. Ever since I found out about the stupid, fucking agreement you made with her, it’s like you actually want to marry her! I don’t understand. Yeah, I might be 18 and I may be too young to understand shit like this, but every time I see you, my heart beats faster. I know exactly how I feel about you but I question how you feel about me.” I say and I pause and look down at Jack.
