“Yes, yes I am but I’m not young anymore.”
“Then either figure a way out of your agreement or I’m going to figure a way out of this relationship”
“Come on, you can’t be serious?”
“I’m very serious Jack. I may not like Lisa, but I’m no home wrecker. It’s your decision.” I say and I walk out of the classroom.
“Jess, please stay. You know what my decision is. It’s always you and it will always be you!”
I shake my head and keep walking out of the school. I walk outside and begin walking home.
Jack POV
“Jess, please stay. You know what my decision is. It’s always you and will always be you!”
And she’s gone. God! It’s like once a week I lose the love of my life. Why? Because of that bitch, Lisa! Why won’t she just leave me alone! For god’s sake. How the hell do I get out of this one?
Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!
I look down at my phone and guess who it is…..the devil herself, Lisa.
“What do you want, Lisa. I’m a little busy”
“No you’re not. By the looks of it, you’re just sitting at your desk sulking about the little fing you just ruined.”
“That was not my fault, wait…..where are you?”
Knock Knock Knock
“I’m right outside, open the door.”
I wlak over to my classroom door and open it.
“Do you want to ruin my life even more?”
“Oh don’t be so dramatic.”
“You haven’t seen my dramatic side yet.”
‘Are you going to be this moody at the wedding?”
‘Wedding?”
“Uh yeah, you and I are getting married”
“Over my dead body”
“Excuse me?”
“I said, over my dead body. I am not marrying you, Lisa. I don’t understand why you are so obsessed with me. You cheated on me. You broke off the engagement. It was you who wanted out, so why? Why me?”
“I was young and naïve. I didn’t know what I wanted back then and now I do.”
“Whatever. I’ll see you in court. I am not marrying you.”
“You marry me or else, Jack Morris.”
“Or else what?!”
“Or else your little student gets hurt.”
“Excuse me?!”
“You heard me! Either you marry me or else I hurt her.”
“You wouldn’t dare!”
“Try me.”
I grab my briefcase and push past her.
“Don’t make the wrong choice, Jack!” Lisa calls out as I walk out of the classroom. I take out my phone, dialing Jess’s number.
‘Come on, pick up!’ I say as it goes to voice mail for the 5th time now. ‘Hey it’s me. Just call me back, please. I’m sorry’
I drive down to the Hogan household and ring the doorbell.
Mr. Hogan answers the door “Oh, Jack, can I help you?”
“Is Jess home, sir?”
“No. I thought she was with you.”
“No. She didn’t want a ride home today. I thought she would just come straight home.”
“What happened?”
“It’s hard to explain”
“My daughter didn’t come home today, boy. You best be telling me what the hell happened.”
“Okay. When I was younger, I was engaged to a woman named Lisa. Now, she cheated on me and such. However, I was blindsided by the love so I ignored the cheating. She broke off the engagement so I moved on. Although, when I was about 16, Lisa and I made a pact that by the time we turn 26 we would marry each other if we weren’t married already. I turn 26 on Friday and now she is back to collect the pact.”
“I don’t know what my daughter sees in you.”
“Honestly sir, neither do I. I have broken her heart so many times for the stupidest of reasons.”
“Do you have any idea where she might be?”
I think for a bit. “I think I might know. I’ll call the house, if I find her.”
“You better find my daughter and fix this imprudent mess.”
“I will sir. You have my word.”
I shake his hand and run back to my car. I drive down to the reservoir, sprinting the 2.5 miles into the trail. I duck a right down the hidden path and I see her, I see her sitting on the abandon dock with her feet hanging over the side, just above the water.
I walk over and sit down next to her.
“Hi” I say, quietly
No response.
“Look, I know you’re mad and you have every right to be. I screwed up. I’ve screwed up about 10 times now.”
“It’s more than that Jack. I don’t care that you’ve screwed up ten times or whatever. I care that you are possibly going to marry her.”
“Jess there is no way in hell I am marrying that woman! She means nothing to me!”
“Well than how are you going to get out of it? No offense, but I’m not ready to get married.”
“I know and I would never ask that. I’m going to talk to a buddy of mine who’s a pretty good lawyer and maybe he can figure something out.”
“Whatever, Jack.”
“Are you sure that’s all that’s on your mind?”
“Yeah.”
“So why do you sound so pissed?”
“I’m 18. Not 26, this is all so over whelming.”
“Is it worth it?”
“Do I get you?”
“Yes.”
“Then absolutely, no doubt about it. But when my teachers asked me 5 years ago where I would be when I was graduating from high school I never would have thought to say, I’m engaged but it’s complicated…”
“I get where you’re coming from. It has been a hell of a year.”
“Yeah.”
“But you only live once. You have to make the best of it, right?”
“I guess so.”
“Do you want to go home?”
“Not really.”
“Where do you want to go than?”
“Can we get ice cream?”
I chuckle a bit and nod “Anything for you. But how about I treat you to some dinner first?”
“Fine by me”
“Sounds good” I say and I stand up, helping her up as well. “Did you walk all the way here?”
“Well my car is at my house, so uh yeah….” She says with a hint of a smile
I smile some myself “Would you like me to carry you?” I ask and I already know what the answer is.
