Chapter Thirty-Nine

Start from the beginning

I walk in and take a seat in the back.

“Good Afternoon class how was your weekend?”

“Stupid” “Boring” “I worked” “Short” Some kids say

“How was your weekend, Mr. Morris?” Rachel asks.

“Oh uh, my weekend was good, thanks. So where did we leave off on Friday?”

“We didn’t do anything on Friday, we had prom so you let us watch a movie.”

“Oh, my bad. Where did we leave off on Thursday?”

“You said we were going to go over our quiz”

“That’s right. Alright chat amongst yourselves while I pass them all back.”

Jack begins passing back everyone’s quizzes.

“Most of you did very well on this quiz. However there were a select few of you who clearly did not read” Jack says “Alright, will someone read number one for me, please…..? Anyone?”

We go over the quiz for a bit and I start dozing off a bit.

“Jess, what did you get for number 12?”

“Huh? What?” I ask, completely off guard

I see Jack smile “What did you get for number 12?”

“Uh, I put the theme of the novel is love never dies?”

He nods his head “I see where you infer that, however the overall theme would be that love over powers everything. Did you hear me, Miss. Hogan?”

“I heard you” I say.

“Anyways…” He begins to say as the bell rings “You guys got lucky today, no homework. Have a good afternoon”

“Miss. Hogan, please stay after class” Jack says and I look at him and shake my head

“I can’t. I have to go pick up my brother”

“He can wait a few minutes”

“No he can’t” I say as the last person walks out

“Jess, what is going on with you today?”

“Nothing.”

“Don’t stand there and lie to my face. Now tell me, what’s wrong?”

“When’s your birthday, Jack?”

“Uh Friday, why?”

“Because according to your ex-fiancé, the day you turn 26, you are all hers again.”

“What?”

“She told me about your little agreement to marry each other when you turn 26.”

“Shit, I forgot about that” Jack says and he rubs the back of his next.

“I have to go”

“Wait.”

“What?”

“Can you help me figure a way out of this?”

“Why don’t you ask your soon to be wife.”

“Jess, come on. That’s not fair”

“No, what’s not fair is that the love of your life can be legally taken away from you because he’s an idiot” I say and Jack takes a step closer to me. I put out my arms to stop him, but instead he grabs them, pulling me to him.

“Jess, I know this sucks and I know it is not fair. But I made that agreement when I was young and stupid”

“Well you’re still stupid” I mutter and he looks down at me
