Author's note: So... many...reads... I'm easily impressed :P This is where the fantasy is introduced, but it doesn't last long. As for those who read this for the romance, it'll come up soon enough, I swear. More characters will be introduced, so it won't just be Lin and Aleck. Maddy doesn't get a large role, well, you'll find out. Hope you enjoy, comment and vote :D

There are those who are born to protect and those born to be protected. Or so they say. Whoever they are.

I normally wear headphones when I play my games, just so I don’t bother anyone with the music. It’s this reason that when I looked up outside my bedroom window that I noticed it was raining and then realized that it was nearly seven.

It’s been a week since Aleck questioned me. It’s been a week since I’ve been doing some research on what I saw on the way home.

I rolled out of bed, and I mean roll. I let myself fall onto the floor, tangled in blankets and stayed that way for a minute before getting up, raiding my mother’s closet for a suitable dress. A quick use of the curler, a clip to put my bangs away, some makeup, and I was ready to go. Oh, and of course I would have my PSP.

I may be a tomboy but I sure know how to dress up.

To explain, it’s May (possibly. I don’t keep track of time) and that means prom. Doesn’t mean I’m looking forward to it. No, I would much rather spend my prom night at home on my beloved PSP but that wouldn’t be the case.

I grabbed the umbrella from the closet, knowing that Aleck had already left with Maddy. The school was a bit away, but a little exercise never hurt.

Stuffing my PSP into the purse I carried, I slipped on the headphones and begrudgingly walked to my high school.

            ****

The gym was already filled with disco lights, music that made the air vibrate, and the smell of booze. I never liked alcohol to be completely honest.

I stepped inside, my eyes adjusting to the darkness. My umbrella was put away somewhere safe.

Now to see where the person I came all the way over here was.

            “Lin? Is that you?”

Aleck was clearly drunk, Maddy missing. Probably drunk too.

            I nodded.

“Ahahaha, Lin, didn’t know you could dress up like that!” he laughed loudly and completely not like his usual self. He reeked of beer. “So who’s the lucky guy? Gotta go beat him up, am I right?”

He teetered a little but slung his arm around my shoulder.

“Come on, tell me, who is it?” he asked, his face a drunken serious. His green eyes bore right into my blue ones, and then he gave that same laugh. “I’m joking; you don’t talk!”

            No shit Sherlock.

Ignoring Aleck, I scanned the darkness, trying to make out the specific figure that I was searching for.

            Ah.

Of course it’s always in the corner near the bathroom, can never be anywhere else.

“Hey, hey, where ya goin’?” Aleck had taken another swig, I’m going to bet. His words were becoming more slurred by the minute. “I… I’m comin’ with cha, ‘kay?”

            I’d rather not.

Aleck wouldn’t let go of me though, so I had to decide on what to do. The prices of both decisions were on the same level of consequences, so I shrugged to myself and began to walk to the dark corner in which the person stood.

“You playin’ with your games again Lin? You should put it down sometime,” Aleck said, raising a hand and almost took my PSP away from me. Thankfully I had dodged his attempt.

I held up my finger to my mouth for him to be quiet, but he seemed to be lost in his own world at this point so I gave up.

            Just never take my PSP.

The person I had finally found was with a girl in a revealing dress, the two locked in a passionate kiss. I watched carefully from a distance as the two pulled apart for those few seconds and I confirmed what I had seen a week ago.

One more click on PSP as Aleck looked stupidly around. Where was Maddy and why hadn’t she watched him? He wasn’t good with alcohol.

            And then time stood still.
