“Jessica, calm down. Your father was on a business trip and not technically deployed. He was sent over to Afghanistan to step in for a fallen general until they sent the replacement. They were driving into the base, and the truck hit a landmine. Several were killed instantly, but your father is in critical condition. Now, currently we are not allowed to see him. They will be flying him home as soon as he is in stable condition.” My mom says. The tears start racing down my cheeks, hitting the carpet below my feet.
“How could this happen? No! It’s impossible. It’s not him.” I say in denial. “It can’t be him!” I yell.
“I’m sorry honey” My mom says and she tries to comfort me.
“No! Get away!” I yell and I walk back into my room and throw on a pair of yoga pants over my along with my pink and black Nikes.
“You’re being irrational!”
“Irrational? Are you serious? My father is hurt, and you have the nerve to call me irrational?!” I yell, tears streaming down my face. I walk out of my room
“I’m sorry mom, but I can’t do this right now” I say and I push past her.
“Jessica, where are you going?!”
“For a run. I can’t do this” I say to my mom and I run downstairs
“Jess wait” John says as he grabs my arm
“Not now John, please?” I ask as I pull my arm away and I run out of the house to the one place where I know I am safe and understood.
I run for miles upon miles, until I end up at his apartment complex. I ring the doorbell and he buzzes me up
“Come on up, the doors open!” He says.
Hmm I wonder who he was expecting.
I walk upstairs and open the front door.
“Jess?” he asks as I am standing here wearing black yoga pants and a light pink V-neck. “What are you doing here?” He asks as I just stand in the doorway, in a daze.
“Jess? Are you okay?!” I hear him ask again and I shake my head and fall to my knees.
“Jess!” Jack yells and he runs over and wraps his arms around me, holding me up as I cry onto his chest. “Shhhh, it’s okay. Whatever it is, it’s okay” Jacks coos.
I shake my head. “No. No it won’t.” I say quietly.
“What happened?”
“My dad’s truck hit a land mine overseas and they don’t know if he’s going to make it.” I say, sniffling.
“What?” Jack asks “How?”
“I don’t know. That’s all my mom told me before I ran out” I say as Jack wipes the tears from my cheeks.
“Your dad is strong Jess. He will make a speedy come back. Don’t worry”
“Promise?”
“I promise, babe” Jack whispers. I rest my head on his chest, listening to the sound of his heartbeat. “Why don’t you go lie down in my room, get some rest”
I nod my head and Jack picks me up.
“This doesn’t count right?” He asks and I can’t help but laugh a little
“Shut up” I whisper, smiling slightly
“Ah! There’s that smile I love so much.”
I yawn a little as Jack lays me down, taking my shoes off and cuddling up in his big, fluffy comforter.
