Chapter Twenty-Nine

Start from the beginning

“I’m warning you, Miss. Hogan.” He says and walks over and squats down in front of me.

“I’m going to give you two options. You can either get up and play or go to the office.”

I stare blankly up at him.

“So what’ll it be?”

“You don’t want to start this” I whisper “I have so much against you right now. So I suggest option three, which is to get the hell away from me.”

“Are you black mailing me?” He whispers now furious.

“Why, I would never do such a thing, Mr. Morris.”

“Go to the office, NOW!” He yells pointing to the door.

“Go fuck yourself” I say, looking up into his eyes.

“Go!” He yells again

I roll my eyes and walkout of the gym. Instead of going to the office I walk outside and over to the football field.

“What’s up Steve” I say to the custodian.

“Rough day?”

“Something like that.” I say and he laughs a bit.

“Well I just finished cutting the grass, so the field is all yours.”

I smile and he passes me a soccer ball.

“You’re a life saver, Steve” I yell as he walks towards the baseball field. I start kicking the ball around, burning off some steam. About an hour later or so, I kick the ball, completely missing the goal. The ball rolls down into the parking lot. Instead of retrieving it, I lie down on the freshly cut grass and I watch the clouds.

“I think this is yours.” Someone says and they pass the ball back.

“Keep it.” I say and I close my eyes

“What’s up your butt today?”

“Oh you wouldn’t believe me if I told you.” I say back.

“Try me.” Mark says and he walk over to me.

“You’re in my sun.”

“Sucks. Now tell me what’s wrong.”

I open my eyes “I honestly hate you right now.” I mutter and he laughs a bit and lies down next to me.

“No you don’t.”

“Yeah, I kind of do.”

“Whatever. Just tell me what’s got my bestest friend in the world all pissy?” Mark asks and I can’t help but smile.

“Relationship problems, I guess”

“Oh you mean you and Mr. sexy?”

I look over at Mark and he puts his hands up in defense.

“Excuse me?”

“Hey, that’s what all the girls call him. I like girls.” Mark says and I can’t help but laugh at the look on his face.

“Yeah well Mr. Sexy turned into Mr. Asshole.”

“Ouch. Anything I can do?”

“No. I think I can handle it.”

“Are you sure you’re alright? Do you want to cry or something?” Mark nervously asks. I smile at his generosity and shake my head.

“Nope, I cried my eyes out last night. I don’t think I have any tears left.”

“Well then show him that you don’t care. Walk into his class with your head held high.”

“See this is why I love you” I say to Mark as he helps me up off the grass.

“Yeah, yeah.” He says and I smile and the two of us walk into the school just as the bell for last period rings.

“Ooo, we’re late. Can’t go now.” I say and I turn to walk back out.

“Oh no you don’t. You’re going to class.” Mark says and we stop outside Jack’s classroom door.

“Well I have to get going to Calculus, but remember just be calm and keep your head held high.” Mark says and I hug him quickly.

“Thanks Mark. You’re the best”

“I know. Now go”

I nod and I open the classroom door and everyone, including Jack look at me. My eyes immediately go to his. I concentrate on staying calm and I walk to the back of the class where my desk is.

“Thank-You for joining us, Miss. Hogan. Now where were we? I believe I asked you all to finish up the book we were reading, am I right?” Jack asks the class and a few people nod.

“Good. Well I hope you all did, because guess what. It’s pop quiz time!” He says and he reaches into his folder and pulls out a pile of quizzes. “Right, so you have until the end of class to finish.” Jack says and he begins handing out quizzes to everyone. He comes to me last and attached to my quiz is a sticky note that reads stay after class on it.

I take it off my quiz and crumble it up. I look up and my eyes meet his and I shake my head. I look down at the quiz and realize that I don’t know any of the answers. So instead of writing, I put my head down on the desk and just take a little nap. Before I know it, the bell rings and I get up and collect my books.

“Miss. Hogan, please stay for a minute.” Jack says, not even bothering to look up from his desk.

“I can’t I have plans.” I say and now we are the only two left in class.

“You mean plans with your boyfriend?”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“Oh please, I saw you outside this morning with Mark.”

“Your point?”

“Jess, come on. I see the way he looks at you. He is clearly in love with you.”

Mark, in love with me? No. He’s one of my best friends. That could never happen. Beside he’s dating Holly.

“You have no idea what you are talking about. I have to go.” I say and I walk to the door.

“Wait.” Jack says and he grabs my arm.

“For what?”

“Were you serious in the gym, this morning? About blackmailing me?”

“That’s what you’re fucking worried about?”

“Watch your language.”

“Or what? You’ll give me a detention? I don’t give a flying fuck.”

“Just please don’t tell anyone.”

“Fine, I get it, you want to forget that we ever happened? fine, it never happened" I say

“That’s not what I meant…” Jack says but I cut him off

"No this time you listen I know you’re a teacher and I’m a student, I know there can’t be fraternization between them, but that doesn’t give you the right to be condescending and rude. Believe me I don’t want to work with you just as much as you don’t want to work with me, but since we have to, you have to act like a professional, and you have to treat me like one too." I say and I pull my arm away.

“Are you finished?”

“No.” I say and I unclip the necklace with the ring on it and I put it in Jack’s hand. “Now I’m finished. Goodbye Jack” I say and I walk out of the classroom.
