Chapter Twenty-Four

Start from the beginning

“No, no. Dad, I would never. You know that” She says

Wait? What? She would never? Never what? Never have kids? Jess doesn’t want kids? But, I wanted at least two maybe three kids! I know that sounds selfish but how could she say that?

I look at her and she’s looking at both her parents. I stand up next to her, taking her hand in mine. She looks down at them and then up at me and she smiles.

“Can I continue?”

“Yeah, go on.” Her mom says

“Mom, Dad, as I was saying before. Jack and I have something to tell you. No I’m not pregnant and no we are not engaged.”

“Oh thank god!” Her dad exclaims

“Brian! Let her tell us” Mrs. Hogan says.

“As I was saying, remember when we went out to dinner a last month and Jack told you he was a bartender?” Jess asks and her parents nod. “Well, he is a bartender but he has another job too.”

“Oh really?” Her mom asks and I just nod.

“So Jack, what’s this mysterious second job?” Mr. Hogan asks

“I got this, Jess” I whisper and she nods, holding me close. “I am a High School English teacher.”

I look at the two of them and it hasn’t hit them yet.

“At what school, dear?” Mrs. Hogan asks and I chuckle a bit, rubbing the back of my neck with my free hand.

“At West Chester High.”

“So at Jess’s school?”

“Yeah. But that’s not it. Jess is one of my students” I say slowly. I look at the both of them and Mrs. Hogan looks confused and Mr. Hogan looks furious.

“YOU’RE WHAT!?!!” He yells, now standing up.

“I’m Jess’s English teacher.”

“No, you’re a pervert!” He retorts.

“Sir, that’s jumping to conclusions. Don’t you think?”

“No, what I think is that you should get the hell out of my house!”

“Dad! Stop!” Jess says, trying to remain calm for everyone. I look over at Mrs. Hogan and she just looks confused.

“Mom?”

She looks up at me and Jess, looking back and forth between the two of us; like she is studying us or something.

“Chelsea, what do you think of this whole thing?” Mr. Hogan asks and she looks over at him and shrugs.

“I think it’s romantic” She says and Jess smiles.

“Really?” She asks

“I mean don’t get me wrong, I am not happy that he is your teacher and all, but I have seen how much the two of you care for each other. So it’s okay in my book.”

“And what about you, Dad?”

“What about me? How could you be with this guy Jess? He is clearly only in it for one thing, and once he gets it he is just going to move on to another student!”

“Dad! No he won’t!”

“Sir, I love your daughter”

“Love? She doesn’t know what love is. She is 17 for God sake!”

“Dad, I am 18!”

“No you’re not!”

“I turned 18 on the 11th!” She yells, clearly pissed now.
