“Or else what?”

“Why does there always have to be an or else?”

“Jack, there’s always an or else”

“You’ll find out one day”

“Fine.”

“Fine.”

“Good bye Jack”

“Good night, Jess.”

She smiles and reaches for the door handle. “Uh excuse me?”

She laughs a little and turns towards me “Yes?”

“I think you forgot something” I say

“Hmm really? What might that be?”

“This” I whisper and connect my lips to hers. I smile, just as she leans into the kiss I pull away. “Good night Jess.”

“I hate you” She mumbles

“No you don’t”

“Yes I do”

“No you don’t you LOOOOOVVEEEEE me!”

“Good night, Jack”

“Night” I say smiling and I kiss her forehead and she walks inside. I drive home with a smile on my face.

Friday Morning

Buzzz! Buzzz! I moan and roll over and I pick up my phone. It’s a text from Jess.

Hey, Not feeling well. I’m going to skip school. But I’ll still see you tonight? –Jess xoxo

I read the text and sigh a bit. How am I supposed to get through the day without her?

Hey. Not feeling well? I’m sorry. Feel better. And yeah, I will be there. –Jack xoxo

Yeah, lady problems. Gross, right? –Jess

I laugh a little. Wow, she really is an honest girl

Feel better. Do you want some chocolate or anything? –Jack

Actually can you bring some blue Gatorade and DOTS? –Jess

DOTS as in the candy? –Jack

That’s the stuff –Jess

Okay, I’ll see you later – Jack

Try not to have to much fun without me in school –Jess

I laugh a little as I get up out of bed and I hop in the shower. I get out, change and I call the school. “Hey Mrs. Golding. Yeah, it’s Jack Morris. I’m sorry but I won’t be able to make it into work today. Yeah, family problems. Okay. Thank-you” I smile and hang up.

I leave my apartment and I pick up two bouquets of flowers, a twelve pack of Gatorade, some DOTS and a bunch of other stuff.

I drive over to Jess’s house and wait down the block for both her parents to leave.

Around 9:00 AM I walk up to the front door and ring the doorbell.

“I swear to god, if you are a Jehovah’s Witness I am going to kill you!” I hear her yell from the other room. I laugh and ring the bell again, holding two bags full of goodies.

She walks over and opens the door wearing, pink Soffee shorts, one of my Harvard sweatshirts and a pair of mismatched socks.

“Eyes up here, Mr.”

I smile and blush a little and look down into her eyes. “I love it when you wear my clothes” I whisper and I kiss her forehead. “I brought some things for you” The two of us walk over to the couch and we sit down. She leans against the arm of the couch, hugging her knees and I sit down with on leg bent on the couch, facing her.

“Jack, why aren’t you at work?”

‘My girlfriend is sick. So it is my job to take care of her”

She smiles and looks up at me. “You are honestly the sweetest guy I have ever met”

“Oh come on. You make me sound so feminine”

“Being sweet is not a bad thing!”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive” She says smiling and I nod

“Fine. Then”

“So what did you bring?”

“I brought you, DOTS, Gatorade, Flowers, Ibuprophen, a few movies and a teddy bear”

“Jack, you did not have to do this!”

“Considerate it part of your late birthday present”

She smiles and wraps her arms around my neck. “I love you. But you don’t have to buy me things. You’re already stuck with me”

I smile and nod “I love you too. That’s why I did buy you stuff, to make you feel better.” She smiles and takes the teddy bear, holding it close to her. The rest of the day is spent eating junk food and watching Chick Flicks. Around 2:00 PM Jess gets up and walks into the kitchen.

“Hey Jack?”

“Hmm?”

“Is there any way you could go down the road and pick up Gabe? My car is in the shop”

“Yeah sure, that’s fine.”

‘Okay, I’ll call Deb and tell her you’re picking him up. Meanwhile I’m going to go shower and get ready for tonight.”

I smile and nod. I get up off the couch, clean up a bit and I go to pick Gabe up.

I ring the doorbell and a middle aged women answers the door.

“You must be Jack, come on in” She says smiling

I shake her hand and follow her inside.

“Jack!” I hear Gabe yell and he runs over, wrapping his small arms around my legs.

“Hey Bud!” I say and I crouch down, on his level. ‘What’s up?”

“Nuffin. Just playing with some toys”

I smile and nod “Your sister sent me to pick you up. Are you ready to go?”

“Yeah”

“Okay then” I say and I pick him up and he pretends he’s an airplane the whole walk out. I buckle him up and we drive back to his house.

“It’s nap time, right Gabe?”

“Do I have too?”

“Yeah, sorry bud. Not my rules.”

He nods and he walks over to the stairs.

“Will you tuck me in?”

“Of course I will buddy” I say smiling and I pick him up and walk upstairs. I put Gabe down to bed and I walk into Jess’s room just as she walks out.

‘Hey, Jack’s sleeping and the living room is all cleaned up”

She smiles and walks over to me. “Now what would I do if you weren’t around, Jack Morris?”

“I don’t know”

“And I never want to find out” She whispers and I smile kissing her forehead.
