“I met Emily when I was a teacher.”
“Still not following”
“Jack, she was one of my students. I fell head over heels in love with this girl two days after we met.”
“Oh uh, wow Tim. I had no idea. I hope you don’t mind me asking, but how old were you when you met?”
“She was 17 and I was 26. Why?”
“Oh no, just wondering. So do I still have my job?”
Tim chuckles a bit and nods “Yes, sir I believe you do. But I don’t want to see you two being unprofessional on school grounds. Okay?”
I nod and stand up, shaking his hand “Thank-You so much, Sir”
“And if you hurry, you still have about a half an hour before students start getting here.”
I smile and nod. I run out of his office and over to Jess’s locker. I turn the corner and I see her sitting on the floor, leaning against it.
Alright Jack let’s test your acting skills
I walk over, looking bummed and upset.
“Hey, so what did you say?”
“Nothing really. I just gave him my recognition letter”
“Oh. So it’s official. What school are you going to teach at now?”
“I don’t know.” I say and I sit down next to her “What should I do?”
“Hmm, I don’t know. There are a few high schools in the area that you could always go to.”
“Or, I could always keep teaching here” I say smiling
“Jack?”
“Mr. Walkmen didn’t fire me. Turns out his wife was one of his students”
“Are you serious!?”
“Dead Serious”
“Oh My God! Jack that’s amazing!”
I smile and wrap my arms around her “God I love you”
“I love you too, but the bells about to ring” She says just as the bell rings
“How did you do that?”
“It’s one of my many talents”
“Really?”
“No, but I do know how to tell time on a clock.”
“Well I consider that a talent, since half the senior class can’t do that” I say and she laughs and nods
“It’s sad how true that is.”
I smile and help her up. “I’ll see you last period, Ms. Hogan”
“Bye Mr. Morris”
The day goes by slow and very boring. Finally last period arrives and I wait and wait for the love of my life to walk in. I see Liv and Mark walk in, but no Jess. The bell rings and I call Liv up.
“Hey, where’s Jess?”
“I have no idea, sorry Mr. Morris.” I nod and she sits down.
About fifteen minutes later, Jess knocks on the classroom door. “Class just start reading chapter 18 and 19. I’ll be right back”
I walk out into the hallway and over at Jess, as she leans against the lockers. I walk over and stand in front of her, putting both hands on the lockers next to her head.
“You’re late, Ms. Hogan”
“Yeah sorry. I was talking to a new friend. Who just so happens, wants to have dinner with us soon”
“Oh yeah? And who might this friend be?”
“None other than our own, Tim Walkmen”
“Really? What did he say to you?”
“He told me the story of how he and his wife met. It is a lot like ours. It’s kind of weird”
I laugh a bit and look down at her. “Yeah he told me this morning. But you were still late for my class, so I’ll have to give you a detention, Ms. Hogan”
I see her roll her eyes and I smile
“We’ll see about that, Mr. Morris”
“Oh still as stubborn as always I see”
“Very funny” She says ‘Oh and by the way, he did give me a pass”
“Yeah, well if you want a ride home, than I recommend that you stay anyway”
She smiles and pushes me off her and she walks into the classroom. I follow behind her and I see her sitting on my desk.
“So class, where were we? Oh, I know we were just about to have a DANCE PARTY!” Jess yells and the class cheers
I hold back a smile and I walk into the room, slamming the door shut.
“Everybody SIT DOWN!” I yell and I look at Jess and shake my head “You. You have detention. Two hours after school, today. As for the rest of you, you better sit down and read chapter 18-24 and expect a pop quiz tomorrow”
“Oh Man!”
“Come on Mr. Morris!”
“Tomorrow’s Friday!” The kids in the class all say.
I shrug my shoulders “Bummer. I already graduated from high school. So I really don’t care.”
I watch as everyone sits down and Jess walks over to her desk in the back and she sits down and pretends to be doing work. I can’t help but look at her.
“Ms. Hogan. Please come up to my desk for a minute”
I see her roll her eyes and she gets up and walks over to me.
“Yes Mr. Morris?”
“Two questions. One, do you even have your book to read from?”
“Uh no, it kind of burned”
“It what?”
“Well, it was you or the book. And I chose you.” She says and I look up at her, realizing what exactly she is talking about. I nod and I reach into my desk and I pull out an extra copy.
“Here you go” I say smiling and she nods
“And the second question?”
“Oh yeah, uh have you been taking your medicine?”
“I should get back to my desk. I have to read”
“No, Jess wait. I’m serious”
“I’m sorry Mr. Morris. This is not the time to talk about this”
“Fine. Just don’t forget, two hours after school”
She nods and turns to walk back to her desk. What is up with her today? I ask myself. The class goes on….
