Minerva led Severus and I through the castle, furiously checking every crack and crevice in the corridors. We were rushing like madmen.
Knowing what I knew, Sirius had definitely gotten the bed arrangements right... what I didn't understand is how he managed to get caught and why he was so deranged about it. According to Minnie's story, Padfoot had given Sir Cadogen (the replacement for the portrait lady after the incident of him trying to break in) a weeks worth of the passwords he'd set, found on a piece of parchment lost by Neville. Once he got into the common rooms, he snuck up to Ron's bed and hovered over the boy with a knife- Ron woke up, saw the murderer looming over him, and naturally broke into screams of terror. Alerted, other Gryffindors woke up making Sirius escape with haste.
