CHAPTER TWENTY NINE
chicago

HARLOW HATED LOUD SPACES AND PEOPLE. she hated seeing everyone looking at her, even though they actually aren't. when she's around people, her chest begins to sink, her heart begins to slow. she gets a panic in her thinking everyone wants her dead. parties weren't harlow's thing for years, usually someone would end up dead when harlow went to parties. dick seemed to become shy as they looked around, "wow. this is all for you?" he asked as harlow stood next to him

"yep." donna replied making harlow's mouth drop. no way. harlow couldn't even 10 people to actually throw her a 'going away' party. harlow didnt actually want one, barry planned it because harlow was heading to college (right before garth died and harlow had to stay to figure things out). "some of the works were published online, but most of it's my personal stuff for when I traveled."

"this is really cool." dick pointed out making harlow look at the photo. he glanced at her as she studied the photo, he was falling in love again with a girl who didnt want to love. she didnt want to get married anymore, or have kids. her heart was broken, and no one could pick up the pieces. they couldn't put it back together, kiss it right in the middle to make sure it wasnt broken anymore. it would always be broken.

"don't sound so shocked." donna replied  turning around, harlow looked at the photo a little longer. she blinked, snapping her thoughts away as she turned to look at donna again. a small smile was on harlow's face to calm herself, people were looking right at them. the brunette scratched her wrists, feeling blood rush out of them from fresh cuts.

"no, I mean it." dick argued with a small on his face, donna wrapped her arm around harlow bringing the youngest in for a hug. harlow wrapped her right arm around her best friend as donna pointed at one of them, harlow raised her eyebrow. the photo reminded donna of her best friend, but donna would never admit that to harlow violet.

"yeah, I know you do." donna smiled, "all right there's some people I need to talk to. you two go ahead and mingle." harlow looked at her friend with a disgusted face, donna booped harlow's nose as she let go of the brunette. donna wanted to stay with harlow, knowing her anxiety was getting to the best of her, but she had people that were important.

"mingle?" harlow asked, "I hate people." she looked around at the people, way to many people there. there was more people here than her 9th birthday party, which was held at an arcade so everyone came.

"you know, have an interaction that's not agenda driven." donna explained as harlow groaned, "conversation instead of interrogation."

"why?" the other two adults asked in unison.

"you two could use some work on your small talk." donna replied  cringing a little. harlow looked at the people, none of them look interesting to talk to. one of them was kissing their boyfriend, the two all over each other. another person was sniffing a woman's hair. there was a pink haired lady in the back drinking her ass off while laughing, people walked away from her.

"we know how to make small talk." dick argued back, donna clicked her tongue.

"sometimes you're confrontational." she replied as harlow looked at dick.

"no I'm not." he argued.

"like right now."

"I am not." harlow rolled her eyes at him being a child.

"wow. that was adult." donna replied as dick gave her a stupid smile. "I have to go and be donna troy. you just try and enjoy yourself.."

"hmm. hm." dick said as donna walked away. harlow groaned, "am not-"

"are too." harlow walked away from the two, grabbing a glass of whatever they were serving. harlow drank it all in a second, cringing at the taste as she set the glass down on the bar counter. the brunette ran a hand through her hair, she could just book it and leave everyone and the world behind. harlow was to kind for that, she at least wanted to say-

"you new around here?" a voice called out from behind her, harlow tensed up as she turned around. no way, harlow thought, seeing her 14 year old crush, griffin teque. "harlow?"

"griffin." harlow smiled as they hugged. harlow watched as dicks eyebrows raised from across the room, she could tell he was jealous. harlow rolled her eyes, maybe a one night stand with griffin would make him realize that she never loved him. griffin went to the school harlow was going to after barry adopted her.

griffin was a brunette, tan, surfer dude. he talked about he would go to california for  the holidays and surf. he always smelled like the beach, harlow recognized the smell any day. he liked harlow, they dated, and then harlow left him because they realized that young love would never work out. they remained friends, but it was awkward.

"how are you?" griffin asked, setting cash on the table for the bartender. harlow shrugged with a small smirk on her face, how could she get him in a room for the night. "same, looking for love still."

harlow scoffed, a playful grin on her face seeing dick tense up. "why didnt we work out again?" harlow asked taking a drink of her champagne as griffin chuckled, wrapping his arm around harlows shoulders. "i missed you grif."

"i missed you too lowlife." griffin replied making harlow slap him on the arm playfully at the nickname. the brunette man snickered, hiding his smile as harlow glared at him. "why are you here?"

"donna is my best friend. i was in town, might as well support." harlow replied with a small smile, she tapped her finger on the glass looking at the wall. griffin sighed looking away at a painting, "it was nice seeing you grif."

griffin smiled, tapping his friend on the shoulder, "you too. call me sometime would ya?" harlow nodded, saluting to him before walking away back to dick who was scoffing at harlow's behavior.

"jealous richard?"
