Chapter 39: Skyscraper

All my windows still are broken,
But I’m standing on my feet.

You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I’m made of glass,
Like I’m made of paper.
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper.

When my 18th birthday finally came I was surprised with a breakfast in bed by my entire family. Mar joined me in bed and dad, mom, and Dave stood around my bed. Mom and dad made chocolate chip waffles and bacon with orange juice.

“This is amazing!” I smiled.

“Happy birthday!” They all said.

I laughed, “This is the coolest birthday yet. Any other surprises planned?”

“A family dinner tonight,” Mom said, “and you can invite two guests. My guess is you’ll invite Anna and Max.”

“How’d you know?” I joked.

Dad shook his head, “We’ll give you your presents after dinner.”

“Sounds good,” I smiled.

“Enjoy your breakfast,” Dad said. “We’ll see you downstairs.”

“I’m staying!” Mar said.

“Me too!” Dave said and sat on the other side of me.

Mom chuckled, “Enjoy.”

“Do you like it?” Mar said.

I took a bite and nodded immediately, “I think it’s the best breakfast I’ve ever had. Don’t you two have school?”

“We have time,” Dave said, “We’re already ready.”

“We wanted to stay with you until we have to leave,” Mar added.

“Aw,” I smiled and put my arms around him, “I love you guys.”

“Happy birthday,” they said.

“I love you,” Dave said.

“Me too!” Mar agreed.

I laughed, “I love you too. I feel so loved.”

A little while later Mar and Dave left for school and Max came over before anybody else to wish me a happy birthday. I answered the door and he lifted me off the ground in a hug before I could barely get the door open. I laughed as he set me on the floor.

“Happy birthday!” he smiled.

“Thank you!” I giggled.

“Are you having a good day?”
