Chapter Twenty Two

I don't know specifically what woke me up first: my phone alarm going off from where it was lying in the pocket of my discarded hoodie or the distant sirens beneath the rain hitting the house.

I stirred, wriggling a little, not wanting to get up because I was warm and comfy and being snuggled perfectly.

However, I flicked my ears forward when I realized that it wasn't my alarm.

After a moment of listening, my eyes creaked open just in time for me to realize that I had a horrible, splitting headache.

"Ow," I groaned, covering my face with a wince. I tried to pop my my eardrums by yawning and stretching my mouth, but it didn't lessen the discomfort. I would have written it off and gone back to sleep, but then, it happened.

I froze as the house shook violently for a second, eyes flitting left and right. I looked around for my holoclock, but it was off... actually, everything was off, even the lights. Just as I was about to freak out and wake the kids up, Louise opened the door, but she seemed surprised to see me sitting up.

"Good," she said simply. "You're awake. Grab the kids and come downstairs to the basement. We only have three hours before it hits land."

"All right," I said, shaking the twins and grabbing Rosie, who complained and whined and pestered about sleeping more. "Come on kids, get up!"

"Don't wanna!" Adam mumbled. "Go away!"

"No! No, no! Sleepy!" Rosie snapped, kicking her little legs. "No, no, no!"

"I hear ya. Anyway, Lou, what time is it?" I groggily asked, rubbing my face. "I figured the hurricane was already here with the wind and sirens and stuff."

"Three in the afternoon," she dryly replied, looking up at the ceiling with wary eyes when the house shook again, vibrating in a way that sent dust raining down and made Rosie burst into abrupt but terrified tears. The twins clung to me instantly, looking around blearily. "Come on. We've got a candle party in the basement."

"A candle party?" Kim sleepily asked, blinking her eye boogers away. "Like a birthday?"

"Not in the slightest, but its still pretty fun," Louise said, motioning with her head for us to follow her. "Hurry. Let's go."

"Take Rosie for me?" I asked, holding the grumpy infant out. "I have a few things I need to grab and bring down for safe keeping just in case."

"Be quick," Louise sighed, sweeping forward and taking the little girl off my hands. Kim and Adam sprang out of bed and followed her when she walked out the door, but I paid them no mind and quickly pulled my red hoodie over my t-shirt since it was pretty much dry.

I scratched my head with a yawn, then opened my drawers and grabbed my hoof shears, colored contacts, my razor, my toothbrush, toothpaste, and grooming materials. As an afterthought, I snagged a bag and started stuffing my clothes and all my electronics into it, even my laptop.

Just as I zipped it up, my phone went off and started buzzing. I frowned upon recognizing my ringtone and pulled it out of my pocket, staring at the screen

"Unknown caller?" I muttered, puzzled. I figured it was an advertisement call and hit the ignore button, planning on letting it go, but just as I was about to pocket it I noticed something. A frown wrinkled my face as I tapped on the menu to look at my recent calls, and then my brows shot up in alarm since I had been receiving nonstop calls from this same number for over five hours.
