Chapter One Hundred and Sixty

The store was much bigger than I was expecting it to be, and a lot different, too. I'd been expecting a small gas station's mini mart or something along those lines, but while there were indeed gas pumps off to the side, the entire establishment was actually a grocery store.

Oddly, though, there was only one vehicle in the modest parking lot, a beat-up Chevy sedan from what looked like 2062. I eyed the model as I sauntered past it, taking note of the make and even the sensors on the back and sides. If I had to guess, the vehicle was of the self-driving variety, potentially even one from the last wave of sales from ten years ago.

Governments all around the globe stopped making self-driving cars due to the increasing cases of accidents during bad weather scenarios on the roads at the end of 2063. They weren't illegal to own, though, and some dealerships still sold them used, but they had problems unless they were driven manually. Accidents were fairly common during storms, since the sensors built into the vehicle couldn't register a necessary stop or even objects outside of city limits.

Had something to do with streetlights and GPS and even the chips inside other vehicles, but I wasn't too sure of the specifics. I kicked a pebble onto the curbstone as I stepped onto it, walking up to the automatic glass doors and clacking my way onto polished white tile.

Fluorescent lights buzzed and cooler air washed across my face, but my attention was fixed solely on the cash registers directly in front of me. A bored looking woman with freckles and extremely long red hair was painting her nails at the register, old-fashioned headphones on.

She was the only one present, though, so I casually moved to the left, grabbed a shopping cart from the stack pressed against the wall beside some bargain items, and began to explore. She glanced up when she caught me moving around and her eyes snapped open wide

"Whoa!" she exclaimed in a much deeper and far more masculine voice than I was expecting, and I paused when she took her headphones off, flicking my ears towards her. "Holy shit! Nice rack, man! Never seen anything like them! How big are they, do you figure?"

"What?" I asked, staring at her in confusion, fingers tightening on the cart. "Uh..."

I glanced down at my chest, confused, and to my further bafflement the chick snorted and let out a loud laugh, a booming belly of a thing that shook her shoulders, and tossed her curls back. I realized after a second that she was wearing a low-cut tank-top that revealed a flat chest.

"I meant your horns, dude!" she cackled, grinning at me in a friendly way. "You clearly ain't got no tits so why the hell did you check?! Bahahahaha!"

I flushed, ears drawing back. Freckles covered her throat and chest, but upon closer inspection, I realized that said chest had a well-defined musculature and the shoulders were much broader now that I could see them. It was only when she noticed my staring that she raised a slightly bushy ginger eyebrow and clenched her square jaw; I quickly realized I was being rude.

"Uh, sorry," I said quickly, shaking my head. "For staring, I mean."

"Nah, man, I get it all the time," she said deeply, stepping out into the open and hooking her thumbs into her jeans, slouching a bit. I saw a guarded stare being directed at me when she nodded down at her front, to which my eyes naturally darted. It was only when I saw the unmistakably large bulge in the front of those jeans that I realized that this grey-eyed and genuinely beautiful stranger was actually a guy.

I quickly looked back up at his face. He seemed to be waiting for something, and his eyes were cautious.

"I can see why," I said smoothly, raising a brow of my own. "You're an extremely beautiful dude."
