I was surprised I had even gotten to sleep the night before, honestly. I had been plagued with visions of Kat all night and couldn't stop thinking about the 'what ifs.' What if she didn't remember? What if she did remember? What if none of it even mattered? What if she didn't really want me? It was a nightmare.
Chris and Aunt Lisa met us at Christina Ward's boutique that morning. Chris had looked worn out, but he held his complaining to a minimum due to the fear of both of our mother's wraths. Honestly, they were scary as hell when angered.
"So, Christina just gave you the keys, Nia?" Chris asked skeptically.
"Yes, her store is closed on Sundays. How else would we get in to set my displays and merchandise up?" Nia answered with an eyeroll.
"I just hope that no one calls the cops on us because they think that we're stealing," he said honestly. It was a genuine concern.
Nia let us into the fancy store and let us look around while she read the note that Christina had left about where she could set her stuff up. When she showed us the dedicated spot, we were all impressed. Nia had quite a large display area for her things. It meant that her trunk show had to have done quite well since Christina gave her a spacious area.
"Wow Nini, this is an amazing set up!" My aunt told her while hugging her tightly. "We're all so proud of you!" Nia beamed at the praises.
"Okay boys, what are you waiting for? Both cars are filled to the brim with products and shelving. we have a store to set up!" My mom said with an expectant hand gesture. Chris and I both obeyed. We had known that we were the muscle for them while they were deciding how exactly to display the things.
We were about halfway done unloading the second car when a red car pulled up on the other side of the lot in front of a different store. I hadn't paid much attention to it as I continued unloading. It was when Chris and I walked back out of the boutique to get the last few boxes and he stopped in his tracks while squinting at the car, that I finally acknowledged it.
"Dude, is that Barbie again?" Chris asked while scrutinizing the girl that was bent over and gathering some stuff from the back seat of her car. "I swear that's her car, and I also could've sworn that it looked like her face when I caught a glimpse of it earlier when she pulled in... But I swear I'd recognize that ass anywhere."
"Shut up, Chris! Don't talk about her like that," I snapped at him. My outburst immediately made him smirk and raise an eyebrow at me.
I clenched my jaw as I stared at the girl from behind hard. It certainly looked like Kat's red Jetta. Chris had been right about it looking like her body too. The only thing that was different was that her hair was way shorter. It was about shoulder length when just the night before it had been almost to her waist. It certainly looked like her... everything but the hair.
I swear, the fates were either playing some sort of practical joke on me by putting a girl that looked just like Kat in my path... Or it really was Kat. That would mean that the girl that I'd been thinking about nonstop since I had left her was right in front of me. With those thoughts, there was nothing that I could have done to stop my next move.
"Kat?" I called without thinking while walking over towards her.
The girl that was bent over and getting stuff out of her back seat jumped due to my voice and hit her head on the door frame. "Shit!" She cussed aloud.
I couldn't stop the large smile that formed on my lips as I made it to her. I'd recognize that sweet voice anywhere, and I still thought her saying dirty words like that was adorable. Chris shook his head but followed me. He could see my infatuation plain as day.
