My sister wasn't here again. Which isn't much of a surprise. If I'm home, she's not. When she's home, I'm not. Honestly, I'm surprised that we are even home enough to give attention and care to Moose.
I threw my backpack and dance bag down and made myself a snack.
Moose ran his body along my legs as I stood at the counter preparing my sandwich.
I have nothing to do.
I thought about texting Emily, but she's keeping me out of the loop, so I decided against that.
I thought about inviting Dakota over to stay the night, but as I was scrolling through Snapchat stories, I saw her with two girls from another one of her friend groups Haven and Savannah.
I decided to go visit my mom again. I go daily now. Usually every morning or evening when I'm not with Emily.
I went up there for my lunch break today, so it was only a short visit.
I packed a bag of clothes, just in case I can convince the nurses to let me stay tonight. Mom had a treatment today, so they don't want visitors past certain times.
I also packed various activities like bracelet string and beads, my art sketchbook, and my dance journal.
I fed Moose and grabbed everything I'd need to stay there. I took my keys off of the hook and locked up the apartment.
I drove with my volume low, music just streaming and my mind was wandering. Thoughts of my mom, my friends, Emily, Guidry, and Guidry's baby. I arrived within no time and grabbed my overnight bag, leaving my school bag and dance bag in the car.
I headed up and greeted the nurses at the desk, quickly ducking into my mom's room before they could say anything.
My mom was sleeping. Her room was dim. She looked pale and— sick.
"Hey, love. I had a feeling you'd be back. Just keep it down and let her sleep. She had a big day today." I felt a hand on my back.
I looked up at my favorite nurse Doreen and slightly smiled.
"She's okay though, right?" I asked quietly.
"She's doing better than okay." She rubbed my back.
I nodded and she exited.
I quietly plopped myself on the rollaway bed that was stationed next to her bed and pulled out my bracelet string and beads.
Doreen brought me snacks and some juice while on her nightly rounds to check on mom.
She is the sweetest nurse besides my mom, though I may be a little biased.
I thanked her and she made sure I was settled before leaving to another patient.
Eventually, I grew tired of making bracelets and decided to tuck myself into bed and scroll through my phone. I plugged my charger in and scrolled through Twitter. I eventually made my way to Snapchat, where I went through my memories. I had so many videos in my 'My Eyes Only' folder, since I want to capture moments with Emily. I smiled as I went through them. Many were of me trying to make TikToks, annoying her as she worked at her kitchen table. Some were of me trying to get her to follow trends and dance. Some were of her just being cute and laughing, these were my favorite. Pictures of the two of us were also in the folder. One day, I'll be able to post these and not have to worry about anything.
Eventually, I fell into a slumber. I hadn't realized I did until I heard commotion in the room.
I sat up and looked around, noticing a nurse checking on my mom. Not Doreen. Shift change happened already.
"Hey, baby girl. When did you slip in last night?" My mom asked.
"Uh— not too late, but you were already asleep so I didn't want to wake you." I smiled tiredly.
She waved me over and motioned for me to get into the bed with her.
I did just as she wished.
I cuddled up to her and listened to her breathe.
"You still have a couple hours to sleep, bug. I'll wake you up when you have to get ready for school." She whispered as the nurse dimmed the lights back down all the way and left.
I nodded against her and closed my eyes. I love being with her more than anything. She makes my heart complete. There is no hurt when she's around. I love her. What a special woman. I got so blessed to have her as my mom.
I got up, got dressed and ready for practice, then spent a little time with my mom before I had to leave her again. I arrived a little late to morning practice and scrambled to put my stuff in my dance locker, then out to the actual dance room.
"Nice of you to join us, Alaina." Guidry spoke as I took my position next to Reagan.
I looked down and nodded.
Why did she say it like that? Is she mad?
We ran the dance without mistakes, but Guidry kept picking on me.
I've never been late to a practice before and she gave me permission to be late anyways. I'm confused. I left like crying. She's never been this way to me.
Emily stayed in the office for most of the practice, but eventually came out to watch us. She stayed distant from Guidry as well.
What's going on?
Without looking back, I walked out with the rest of the girls who were dismissed after practice. I got ready for the day and went straight to class when the bell rang. Usually, I would go sit and talk with the officers and Guidry in the office, but today wasn't that kind of morning.
That set my mood for the rest of the day.
First in class, as usual. Emily hadn't made it back yet. I took my seat and waited as the class filled.
I saw Mallory out in the hall, kissing her boyfriend Christian. She walked in after and immediately came to me and asked "Dude, what was up with you and Guidry this morning?"
"Don't know. I don't care though." I shrugged.
If I pretended not to care, it won't hurt me. This is what I told myself, though it still stung.
"What do you mean you don't care? You're her favorite." She pushed.
"I don't care, Mal. Easy as that. Obviously I'm not her favorite today." I snapped.
Emily heard that as she walked in.
She flashed me a sad look then settled into her desk. She's my teacher right now, not anything else.
Today was test day, but I'm in no mood to take a test.
I slumped in my seat and wrote my name at the top of the paper as Emily passed them out. I rolled my eyes to myself and sat up to attempt to do it.
Emily walked by me and squeezed my shoulder.
I love her touch. So gentle, yet strong.
I finished the test and walked it up to her.
"What's wrong with Guidry?" I tried to whisper.
Her finger flew to her lips. Her way of telling me to shut up.
I rolled my eyes and went back to my desk.
I looked at her and she looked back at me.
She's so beautiful. I smiled to myself and looked away. She loves teasing me in class.
Soon the bell released for second period and I stood with the rest of the class.
"Lunch?" I asked her quietly.
"Yep." She said quickly.
I left class with a smile on my face. Leave it to her to turn my mood around.
I avoided the dance room throughout classes, because I knew Guidry stands out in the hallway as a monitor and I didn't want to see her.
I still just can't believe she was on my back today.
Hopefully I'll be able to stay at Emily's again tonight and keep my mind off of things with Guidry. Though, I do have seventh period and after school practice with her still to come.
