Henry: Do you really think there is only one perfect mate?

da Vinci:As a matter of fact, I do.

Henry: Well then how can you be certain to find them? And if you do find them, are they really the one for you or do you only think they are? And what happens if the person you're supposed to be with never appears, or, or she does, but you're too distracted to notice?

da Vinci: You learn to pay attention.

Henry: Then let's say God puts two people on Earth and they are lucky enough to find one another. But one of them gets hit by lightning. Well then what? Is that it? Or, perchance, you meet someone new and marry all over again. Is that the lady you're supposed to be with or was it the first? And if so, when the two of them were walking side by side were they both the one for you and you just happened to meet the first one first or, was the second one supposed to be first? And is everything just chance or are some things meant to be?

It was the 22nd of June.

Olivia sighed, and twisted her plain gold wedding ring on her finger. Two years ago, today, she had stood in the parlor of Hawke's Vale and stared mindlessly at her feet while the minister read their vows.

She was sad as she thought of the warm night. Two years ago, she had taken the Hawke name. Though she had always thought she would have been Mrs. Rashleigh Hawke.

The early morning sunshine did little to light the room. The house was emptily silent. No servants cleaned and shuffled around. Any other time, Olivia would have taken pleasure in the calm. The constant moving of Hawke's Vale was simply draining—especially when Adam was away and she was at the top of it all.

Thoughts of her husband slipped through her mind—certainly, he had been an acceptable husband. Even so, it was apparent that his younger brother had received the better end of the deal when it came to looks. He had admitted as much himself. When it came to brains, they were both certainly very intelligent. But, she knew Adam to be much more aware of others than Rashleigh.

Shuddering, Olivia decided that she would simply lie in bed as long as she could—and try to sleep some more. She did not want to think of today. Not while she was alone. Wasn't she always alone? This day was like every other day.

She hated to think of that day. She hated to think of the night before her wedding, when she had paced the floor, Constance so faithfully at her side. They had considered the damage that could have been done.  She had wondered if he would be good to her, or if he was using her as Rashleigh had been. She had wondered what he would expect of her, as a wife. Questions had risen in her mind.  Why he wanted to marry her had been one that repeated itself.

She had never asked him and had honestly never considered asking him. Olivia figured that a query of that sort would seem impertinent and ungrateful. And yes, she was grateful to Adam for marrying her. He had gifted her with many things: a pretty home, her marriage trousseau, her own personal carriage and apartments.

As far as she knew, he had always been faithful to her. That hadn't been something she demanded from him, for she did not love him. In truth, Adam had always been true to her.
