Her boyfriend turned away for a moment, his gaze focused on the darkening horizon before he inclined his head to the left; he refused to meet her eyes for a second time and his hands were firmly placed in the pockets of his graduation coat.
His expression was blank.
"Come, walk with me."
She silently obeyed.
"What did you do, Sasuke," Itachi whispered softly after he witnessed the young woman he'd grown to love as a sister run away from his younger sibling in a fit of hysterical sobs and tears.
He turned away from his brother, shielding his expression and shrugged his shoulders as if he didn't just commit the biggest mistake of his life.
"I did what I had to do."
"Sasuke—"
"She's better off. I can't be— Just leave it alone, Itachi. It's done. We're over." The pain in his voice was unmistakable and Itachi bit back his response; knowing the inner turmoil his brother must be going through. Even though he didn't understand just yet, he decided to respect his wishes.
For once, he listened and remained silent.
Sakura forgot how long she'd cried for; hours, days, weeks maybe? 'How could he do this to me? To us? I thought he loved me. I—'
A knock sounded at her door; interrupting her inner turmoil and she rolled her eyes before pulling the covers up higher over her head. "Go away..," she called out, sure it was her Mom coming into her bedroom to "console" her again. She didn't want her Mom's eternal optimism right now.
She needed... no— she just wanted Sasuke.
Her door opened and she was about to berate her mother for not listening when another voice reached her; though it was slightly muffled thanks to her comforter. "It's only me, forehead. Your parents left twenty minutes ago; asked me to come over and cheer you up, so here I am." She felt her mattress dip to the right when Ino sat down on it, before a forceful tug brought her blankets down to her midriff.
"Damn, you look terrible. Your makeup's all smudged and you haven't even changed out of your cap and gown yet." Sakura rolled her eyes and frowned. It could never be said that Ino was shy. She was always blunt and to the point... which wasn't always a bad thing, but tonight—
"I'm sorry, Ino-pig. I was unaware of what the dress code might be for someone who's just been dumped. Next time, I'll be sure to ask you first." Ino tsked loudly and crossed her arms.
"Good riddance I say. He was only holding you back!"
Sakura slowly sat up, brushing her bangs away from her bloodshot eyes before tilting her head. "Wasn't it you who encouraged me to go out with him in the first place. Wasn't it you who said, 'you two are the type that has a love that'll last an eternity. Wasn't it you who said—"
"Alright, alright. Yeah, I did say all of that...," Ino said while crossing her legs; facing Sakura. "But, that was before the damn bastard broke my best friend's heart. Besides, now that you're single and aren't tied down to this place in any way shape or form, you can look into that scholarship offer you got in the mail a few weeks ago."
"Ino," she sighed as she closed her eyes. "I threw it in the garbage can. I thought... well...you know with Sasuke and I...I didn't think I'd be able to—" She paused mid-sentence when she felt a soft touch on her shoulder and opened her eyes wide when she saw that Ino was smiling back at her; flashing a slightly crinkled envelope in her hand. "Y-you—"
"I dug it out for ya. You know, for safekeeping and all that," she said, shrugging her shoulders as if it wasn't a big deal. The blonde hated dirt of any kind, so for her to do this— It meant the world to Sakura.
She fought back tears of joy. "Ino, I'm not good enough to amount to anything. Even if I go, who's to say I'll last more than a couple of months. You don't actually think I'm good enough to make a career out of this, do you?"
Ino smirked and thrust the envelope underneath Sakura's nose, wiggling her perfectly manicured brows suggestively. "There's only one way to find out!" Sakura smiled as she took the offering, her eyes watering anew.
"Thanks, Ino."
"What are friends for," she says with a shrug before rising to her feet. "Now, let's get packing! Your flight leaves in an hour!"
'Wait... what?!'
