"come back!"

y/n tried to run after the kitten, as suddenly as she could without scaring it. noticing how it had hidden behind a nearby shrub, she held a hand out, offering a treat.

approaching it carefully, she tried not to make a sound, and cursing each time her soles slapped against the concrete floor.

the kitten was edging closer, or at least not running away (y/n tended to be a little too optimistic). it looked like it was about to come out, at least y/n thought it did.

"i didn't know cats could shapeshift."

she was caught off guard by the sudden arrival of ni-ki, who had been watching her offer cat treats to the bush (or at least that was what it looked like). she wasn't the only one though.

"you scared her off!" y/n complained, shoving the handful back into her treat bag.

ni-ki took the opportunity to smile as y/n's back was turned, pulling a blank face when she faced him. she'd been feeding the stray cats around the city for as long as he could remember.

he shook the keys in his hand, "look what i found."

"congratulations!"

y/n gave him a huge hug, before following him towards his new vehicle. "are you gonna be my chauffeur for the night?" she asked.

ni-ki muttered something along the lines of "no", but y/n didn't seem to hear anyways.

he knew she was at ease, and it was a nice feeling, to know she felt comfortable around him.

"you know how people say that there's electricity in relationships? things like sparks fly, yeah?"

y/n hummed in reply, not paying much attention.

"i never understood that."

"me neither," y/n replied, continuing to stare out of the window, not paying much attention. she was saying all those filler words she said when he'd go on and on about something she had little interest in.

"i always felt like there was a magnetic force between us. like i'm just pulled inexplicably towards you and no matter where i turn, we always end up together, and it feels like we were made to attract each other."

y/n stayed silent. ni-ki wasn't sure if she was pondering his words, daydreaming, or just tired. she had been getting ready to move away and ni-ki knew it took a lot of energy.

the car pulled up at an ice cream café, a few yards from the beach. it was one of their favourite spots.

"you find us a spot on the beach and i'll join you with ice cream," he explained, before rushing off quickly, not hearing her order.

the beach was pretty quiet. there were only a group of kids playing in the water under their parents' supervision nearby—y/n could hear the smallest one complain about having to wear suncream.

"i believe this for you.."

ni-ki appeared to the side of her, holding out a green tea-coloured ice cream, and a chocolate one in his own. y/n subconsciously compared the two.

"yes, you can try both."

ni-ki gave the girl both desserts before getting out a speaker from his bag.

"please don't start playing music, ni-ki!" she laughed, a little embarrassed, but not enough for her to let go of the cones in her hands and interfere.

"i can't hear you," he joked after turning it on, at a quiet volume.

they sat in silence as the waves joined in their conversation, lapping against the shore like the sound of paintbrushes against canvases—a swish-swishing of bristles.

"i bought you a little something," y/n spoke softly, not disturbing the stillness of the moment. it could last forever and seem like no time had passed at all. "it's a wooden figurine, a flower."

ni-ki inspected the small object, it could fit in his pocket and he was already imagining it accompanying him on his journeys, sitting in the cup holder to the side of his steering wheel, or buckled into the seat like a young child.

"i thought about getting you flowers, but flowers die. i wanted something for you to remember me by, even after our memories fade."

"can we make another one now?" he asked.

"a wooden flower? no—i didn't make it myself.."

"i meant a memory," ni-ki interrupted.

they spent a lot of time together, with warm and fuzzy feelings against the changing weather. it was becoming late, as much as they would both protest the passing of time.

"stay here, y/n. i just want to dip my toes."

"wait, ni-ki!"

he turned around and pressed his lips together in a boyish grin.

"what if i lose sight of you?" y/n called out.

he swatted his hand through the air, in her general direction.

"i'll never be too far away."
