the dressing room was silent, even the manager left to speak on the phone elsewhere. the insurmountable tension suffocated the room; the air was thick and heavy. the members looked on as they watched the drama unfold. sunghoon had been distant all day, and y/n had noticed. she didn't want to push it, but she knew that she had to bring it up.

honestly, the boys noticed it too, but they felt as though it wasn't their place. they were nosy, but they had to be discreet about it, and wouldn't be able to get a straight answer from sunghoon even if they asked him what was off.

all throughout rehearsals, he had been checking his phone between takes, and putting on a stone-cold stare when he had to dance. he had never looked so concentrated on his dance, his phone, and nothing else.

"sunghoon," jay got his attention, "there's someone here for you."

"whatever," he mumbled, without an ounce of care.

he was busy eating his grapes, snacking post-rehearsal. with one hand feeding himself, he was scrolling on his phone. his blank gaze was somewhat scary, even for the boys who had never seen him act out, despite his cold appearance. to say he was unapproachable would be a huge understatement.

"sunghoon, stop it. you're such a pain," ni-ki shouted, aggravated by his dismissive tone. ni-ki would love to have people visit him, but his loved ones were a country away. he felt jealous, but also hurt that his korean brother couldn't make the effort, and wasn't even trying to.

y/n fidgeted with her hands, a sign that she was nervous for what she was about to do. as soon as she entered the room, she had seen her boyfriend's members giving her worried looks. no one spoke a word, but they all knew what they were thinking.

she swallowed the lump in her chest, feeling dizzy with stress, and tapped him on the back: he kept his eyes glued down at his device.

"mhm?" he asked, not making eye contact, in a sharp voice. it wasn't threatening, but it wasn't warm or comforting.

"sunghoon.." she tried to hold back the tears that quickly pent up after hearing his reaction.

"darling, what's making you cry?" he turned around, hearing her voice shake, and noticing that she was struggling. he hugged her, letting her cry, and giving no mind to the black mascara that was staining his yellow shirt.

"your shirt," she lifted her head up as she realised what she had done. "i'm sorry hoon."

"i don't care," he cooed, giggling at her. in return, she set her head back down, and the tears came crashing down once more, with so much emotion that she couldn't stop. she wept, and although it was somewhat muffled by her boyfriend's shirt, the other members could hear her. they cared about her, not as much as sunghoon did, but enough to feel guilty about letting her deal with their member instead of them.

"y/n," he looked deeply into her eyes, and lifted up her chin, to look at him, "you're gonna have to tell me what's bothering you so much."

"you" she spoke quietly, not sure if he had heard her, until he smirked, and replied.

"god, i know" he ran his hands through his hair, but she grabbed them, and held them against his chest, stopping his usual antics.

"no," she looked at the ground, and felt herself sink into it. she didn't want to have this conversation around others, but she had no choice. she couldn't spend another second worrying about him; his attitude was making her go mad.

"what, love?" sunghoon felt his heart break at the sight of her. she was so vulnerable, and in front of his team too; he thought she didn't deserve these emotions. he was never someone who thought that being vulnerable was just an emotion—to him, letting his guard down was him losing all self-respect and dignity, and his pride couldn't allow it.

"you haven't been well," she looked anywhere other than his eyes.

"i'm fine," he choked out, showing that he was anything but.

"really?" she held him closer, so he knew that he could feel safe in her arms. he shed a tear, and breathed heavily.

"i saw a message from an engene.." he started, but hearing his voice break made him pause.

"they sent a photo of you and jake cuddling," he continued; y/n saw his lips wobbling as he fought to keep his composure.

"what? show me!" she propped herself against him, taking a more serious stance.

sunghoon took out his phone, and gave it to her. he had nothing to hide, and she knew the password. she didn't have to look far, since as soon as she had unlocked his phone, the image stared back at her. clearly, he had been looking at it a lot. she looked at it as the two sat in silence for a few minutes, until she let out a breath.

"that's you in the photo, you idiot," she gave a sad smile.

"huh" he looked at the photo more closely, "i thought the clothes looked familiar."

"look, we are literally in your bunk."

jake butted in, "i would never hug y/n, girls have cooties. especially ones who would call me an idiot." he was no longer interested in the conversation, since it was no longer exciting. he was glad is was no longer tense, but he felt weirded out seeing sunghoon so warm after the day he had.

"so it was just a mix up?" she offered as an answer.

"mixed up!" sunghoon started singing.

"shut up or else i will go to jake." she looked at him in disgust.

he continued humming the song, without her approval, until she walked away from him.

before she could leave, he pulled her back in and placed her on his lap, before singing even more loudly than before.

"do you have to do that whilst i'm here?" she put her hands on her hips.

"i'm practising, darling." he began to sing more softly as she rested her head on his shoulder.

"i can practice something else if you want," he spoke to her with love and compassion in his voice, noticing how she was sick of him being so obnoxious.

"yes! just a little bit, please!" she replied, excited that he would sing her favourite song.

"ah-ah-ah," he signalled with his hand, wiggling his finger, "i didn't say i would be practising singing. there's another vocal warm-up that can be just as effective." with that, he crashed his lips onto hers, and entangled his hands through her hair.

she stopped as soon as she had realised what he had done. "you're such a liar, you just wanted to kiss me."
