another school bus slows to a stop, opening its door to let students stumble out. you watch from afar as max joins. in the past, the two of you normally would've ridden in your sister's car. however, she's closed herself off. max pulls on her headphones and suddenly the world disappears. soon enough you joined that world, you became her past and nothing else. you couldn't help but stare, knowing that what you thought would be a lifelong partnership, crumbled beneath her feet. for a moment, as your eyes look in her direction, you felt as though she paused, almost like she wanted to look back to. maybe to finally face you after completely ignoring you. maybe to look right back at you and flip you off. but despite the connection the two of you had, she continues walking. and you turn around, looking over at dustin, giving him a small smile. "how about we head inside?" dustin urges, holding out his hand for you to grab. with one small look back at your old friend, you grab it. "yeah, let's go talk to your nerd brigade or whatever you call it."
