"Are you okay? You seem tired."
"Is that supposed to be funny?" The girl almost rasped out, "How are you expecting me to look after being tied up and questioned for so many days?"
"Hm, that's true."
"Please, just let me go," She begged, "I want to see Light. Please," A shaky breath left her lips, "Light... Light... light..."
"I'm not sure how much more of this the three of them can take," Matsuda, in a sudden spurt of panic, quickly said. It was beginning to worry him, just how harsh and insensitive L was getting.
"Ryuzaki, you have no reason to keep Light locked up anymore!" Aizawa almost shouted in agreement to Matsuda's words, "Do the right thing and let him go, then we can get the Chief out too. Criminals are still being killed even though Misa and Light haven't had access to any of that information. We know that much already, so what are you waiting for?!"
"Not true.." L spoke, licking up the frosting on his finger that he scooped up from the glass of the ice cream cup Kiyo had placed in front of him earlier that day, "All we really know at this point is that Amane harbors an unnaturally strong devotion for Light Yagami."
"Ryuzaki, I'm sorry, but with all due respect from where I'm standing it's starting to look like you're only doing this because you don't want to admit that you were wrong about Light!"
"Yes, I figured you'd say that."
"Okay, fine! But we do know that Kira killed Lind L. Tailor and those FBI agents, right? As Light said, if Kira could kill under surveillance and without access to information there would have been no need! If they didn't pose a threat to him then why would he bother killing them? Kira doesn't kill without good reason, I've heard you say so yourself on more than one occasion..
It's already been fifty days. There's no point to this anymore. Ryuzaki, it's time to start looking for the real Kira."
L couldn't help but feel like something was incredibly wrong over here. How had Light changed so much so suddenly? Why was he behaving like this? Why was Misa behaving like this? It was almost beginning to seem like she worshiped him as though Light were god itself.
"Aizawa," A stern voice had L pausing in his thoughts, "Do not simply sit and question L's judgment, we owe him that much trust, and do not act like you did something to prove Light's innocence through these fifty days. You also just sat and watched Light through the screen, so do not blame L for being selfish and egoistic, when you took no action against it earlier.
As far as the killings of the Lind L. Tailor and the FBI agents are concerned, you never know what motive Kira had behind killing them. It could have been to save himself, it could have been a statement or a warning of sorts, it could have been a right-out threat. If Light is in fact Kira, he might have just killed them to get out of a situation like this, to make sure someone would give the very reasoning you just gave so that he could be granted freedom.
That being said, the case has come to a standstill because of this confinement. There has been absolutely zero progress in the past fifty days other than the initial two weeks of no deaths, but that has also been compensated for. At this point, I could also only suggest that you release them, not because you think they are innocent, but because that's the only way to make the case move forward."
It wasn't because Light is innocent, L replayed Kiyo's words in his mind, but rather because the case needs to move forward.
"Yes, I understand," L spoke quietly, already conjuring up a plan in his head. Flipping on the switch that connected him to Soichiro, he continued, "Mr. Yagami?"
