Chapter 10

Khushi wanted to cry. She felt horrible. How can she wear this beautiful Lehenga and ignore her state as widow and her back? The last thing she wanted was, to create her family any problems. Also, she didn't want people to look at her weird because of her back.

She decided to go to Lavanya ask for help. It sounded stupid but Lavanya was the only human being in this house, Khushi felt, she could talk to.

Her feet led her to Lavanya's room and as soon Khushi knocked, Lavanya opened her door for her.

>>Chamkili? You? Oh, I am sorry, ok? I just did what he wanted me to do.<<

>>I can't wear this Lavanya and I don't know what to do.<<

Lavanya looked out into the corridor and pulled Khushi inside her room.

>>I don't know why you can't wear the clothes Malik wants you to put on for the evening, but I assure you, you do not want to upset him. When he gave me the Lehenga and told me to give it to you, his face, it was so determined and strict that you do not want to mess with him. I think it's better for you to do, what he wants you to do. Otherwise, it could become very ugly.<<

>>I can't. All neighbors will be here tonight and Manorama is very strict when it comes to our family traditions. I don't want to create any scandal.<<

Khushi has one more reason why she didn't want to wear the backless top but that was something, she didn't want to share with Lavanya. She wasn't ready to talk about her back. Khushi wasn't ready to talk with anyone about this, except Buaji.

Also she was was deeply ashamed about her body. Since the accident, Khushi didn't even look at her back. She never turned around while standing in front of the mirror.

>>Look, you should really do it. Just put the Lehenga on and stop thinking about stupid people. You should not care what others think.<<

Khushi still looked at Lavanya with fear and desperation.

>>What's going on, Khushi? Why are you so afraid? It's just a dress.<<

Khushi shrugged while her eyes filled with tears. Lavanya seemed to see what is happening with her eyes, so she pulled her into a hug.

>>I can't, Lavanya. I can't.<<

Lavanya took Khushi's teary face into her palms.

>>Stop crying, ok? Please, stop crying. There is no reason to cry over stupid, unimportant people and a beautiful Lehenga.<<

Usually, Lavanya was cold and distances to everyone but Khushi touched something deep inside her heart. She saw herself in this girl, that she somehow wanted to protect.

>>Now come, I want to make your hair and makeup. You are going to look beautiful tonight.<<

>>No, I can't do this, Lavanya. I can't.<<

>>It's getting old, Khushi. You can and you will.<<

Lavanya placed Khushi on a chair in front of her makeup table and looked again to her, this time her face became really soft.

>>Just imagine I am your boss and you have to do what I tell you to do. And I want you to prepare yourself for being beautiful, because when I am done, you will be the prettiest woman on the party.<<

This was exactly what Khushi didn't want to be. She wanted to hide and not be seen by other people. She wanted to be who she was the past five years. This was safe and something she knew. She was used to stay in the background and be invisible.
