For centuries balls hosted by noble and rich families were the ideal way young pureblood children met with others—forging both lifelong friendships with the ideal kind of company and alliances between houses through marriages—often loveless marriages

Nonetheless it worked for the purest families and was the respectable way of sending one's kin out into the world—with their betrothed—never alone to fall victim to advances from those below them

It was the proper way for good girls and boys to meet—those that respected their parents

It was how all the pure blood children's parents met—from the Malfoy's to the Notts and Parkinson's

It was how Astrid's own parents met—at a ball hosted by the Clearwaters to find a suitable match for their youngest child

A daughter by the name Orla—though the girl was quite young still and hadn't yet even started school the Clearwater's believed the sooner they matched her to a boy the easier it would be in the future once she did leave to Hogwarts

She would know to be loyal to her betrothed and only him—she would entertain no other boys of different houses and lower names

And when the time was right she would wed the man she had been betrothed to since childhood

Every noble family hoped to arrange matches this way—forcing their children into childhood engagements where they could not argue because they simply knew no better

Orla was a girl of only nine at the time and her brother—two years her senior was least pleased with this occasion everyone else seemed to glow at.

Soon after the summer he would leave for Hogwarts and his parents would parade his baby sister around—house to house to find her a husband without his knowledge nor his consent
