The called shot. If you don’t know what I’m talking about I’ll explain it. It was the 5th inning of game three in the 1932 World Series. At bat was perhaps the greatest pure hitter to play baseball. As he stood in the batters box waiting for the pitch, he pointed his bat towards the bleachers behind center field, calling his shot. The pitch came and the Great Bambino hit a home run to center field. It is a great moment in the history of baseball, and lives in the hearts of many who desire greatness in sports. But there are a couple called shots in our history that a much greater. In a valley somewhere in Israel, a young man said to the greatest fighter the Philistines had to offer. A man over 10 feet tall, wearing body armor weighing over 125 pounds, and using a spear who’s head weighed nearly 20. “Then said David to the Philistine, Thou commest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s and He will give you into our hands.” I’m sure you know the outcome of that battle. Everything that David envisioned came true. God did deliver Goliath and the Philistines to Israel that day. It was a precursor to the greatest called shot in the history of mankind. One in which God sent His Son to die on the cross for us. Then rise three days later and fulfill His promise to defeat sin and give us a means to live forever in heaven with our Maker. Like David said, He didn’t do it with a sword and a spear, but His own life, love, and resurrection. I can’t envisage anything greater than that.
