Match point, second serve, “out.” It was the 2005 Italia Masters tennis match and Andy Roddick was playing Fernando Verdasco. With his serve called out, Verdasco made his way to the net to congratulate Roddick on the win. But instead of accepting congratulations, Roddick argued with the umpire and line judge, claiming that the ball from Verdasco’s serve had actually landed on the line. The evidence was clear, the ball had left a mark where it had landed and it was indeed in. Instead of winning, Roddick went on to lose that match. But he won a more important game than one that could be played on a court. He won trust. Sometimes the right decision can cost us the immediate gratification of winning in a moment, but the gratification that comes from integrity feels much better than the elation of winning. The emotions of winning wear off, die down, and even lose their intensity, but the satisfaction of living a life of integrity never dies. Integrity leaves a mark that lasts forever, it’s the hallmark of character. Integrity can set this world on fire, it ignites synergy. Integrity is what people are dying to see, it’s the Father speaking through us. What’s your hallmark?
