I got home right after dad did.

He said his recovery is going well and he should be going back to work next week.

Veronica is in her room.

I know something is wrong, but she won't tell me what.

I walk up to her room to check on her...she's asleep.

I close the door and go to my room.

I'm worried about her.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been a few hours and Veronica is still asleep.

My dad fell asleep too. He fell asleep on the couch.

I'm tired and decide that it's time for me to go to sleep too.

I brush my teeth, change into my pi's and get into bed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been asleep for a couple of hours when something wakes me up.

I look over at the clock. It's 12:30 AM

I hear it again.

It's a scream.

It's Veronica.

I rush out of bed, tripping on my backpack.

"Veronica!" I yell out as I run down the hallway towards her room.

She's still screaming. Her screams full of agony.

I open the door, she's on the floor with her head between her hands.

"Veronica! What's wrong?!"

I don't even turn on the lights, I just rush over to her. Her nightlight provides enough light, enough light for me to see.

I kneel in front of her and pull her hands away from her head.

It's then that I see all the blood.

"Oh my God, you're bleeding! Your nose and your ears, they're bleeding!!"

The blood from her nose drips down her chin and the blood from her ears drips down her cheek and down the side of her neck.

"What's happening!?" my dad ask as her rushes through the door and kneels beside me and my sister.

Veronica screams again.

"I can't! I can't take this pain anymore!" she says through tears.

I move around her and hug her, holding her so she knows she's not alone.

"We're going to help you, ok? You're gonna be all right! I promise." I tell her.

"We're going to take you to the hospital right now!" my dad tells her.

But before my dad and I can get her up...she faints.

"Veronica!? Hey, no, no, no, don't do this!" I tell her.

"Hey, kiddo, come on, wake up!" my dad says.

"We gotta go, now!" I tell my dad.

I pick up my sister and carry her downstairs and out the door into the Jeep.

My dad goes in the back seat with my unconscious sister.

I drive. I drive as fast as I can.

I can't believe this is happening again.

A couple of weeks ago I was racing to the hospital to see my dad.

Now I'm racing to the hospital to try and save my sister from whatever is happening to her.

It should've been me. I should've gone in the ice bath.

I promised my mom I'd protect my sister from everything and anything that could hurt her and I just failed her. I failed her and Veronica.

We finally get to the hospital and I carry my sister through the hospital doors. My dad's right behind me.

Dr. Geyer takes my sister and we are forced to stay in the waiting room while Dr. Geyer tries to figure out what is happening to her.

I call Scott and Malia.

They both arrive at the hospital with Melissa.

Melissa hugs me and says, "she'll be fine."

I nod.

She then goes over to my dad and sits next to him.

"Have you guys let Liam know?" Malia asks.

Scott and I shake our heads.

"I'll call him." she says. She pulls out her phone and walks out of the waiting room to make the call.

It's now when Scott tells me what happened with Veronica at school.

I know most of what he tells me.

I know she hasn't been able to sleep because of the bags under her eyes.

I know she's been in pain because of all the Advil she's been taking, which she thinks she's doing in secret, but I found out anyways.

I just didn't know she fainted.

"I'm sorry. I should've told you as soon as she told me." Scott says.

"No, it's ok. Once you promise Veronica something, it's almost impossible to break it. Trust me, I know." I tell him.

Malia comes back.

"He's on his way." she tells us.

We nod.

Dr. Geyer comes into the waiting room.

"She's stable for now. The bleeding has stopped. She's awake now and says she's not in much pain. We don't know the exact cause of the pain. She did suffer a minor concussion months ago, but I'm going to have a CT scan done in about an hour to make sure everything is ok. Two people can go in and see her."

We thank him and my dad and I follow him to the room my sister is in.

She's laying there in a hospital gown.

Her eyes fixed on the ceiling.

When we walk in she slowly turns to look at us and she smiles.

Her smiles makes me feel at ease and gives me a sense of relief.

My dad walks over to her and kisses her forehead.

I hold her hand.

"How are you feeling?" I ask her.

"Better, thanks." she replies.

"Why didn't you tell us what was happening to you?" my dad asks.

"I didn't want you to worry." she answers.

We ask her to tell us about everything that happened since the ice bath.

This time she tells us.

"I knew most of that, by the way." I tell her.

"How?" she asks.

I explain how I figured it out.

"I should've known. I can't keep anything from you." she says with a smile.

I don't know how to explain how much I love my sister.

She's my best friend. She's always been there for me.

If something ever happened to her, I wouldn't be able to bear it.

As much as she smiles and as much as she says she feels better, something is wrong.

I don't know what, but it is.

And I'm afraid that whatever it is, it will take her away from me.

I'm afraid that I'll lose my sister to the darkness that once consumed me.
