Chapter Sixteen

I woke up feeling like I was half dead. Like I'd been drugged. I turned over and looked at the clock. It was 12. Sammie was no where in sight and the apartment was quiet. I peeked inside the other two rooms which were empty.

"Boo!" a voice said startling me, causing me to jump.

"Butch! You scared me!"

"Duh, that was the point."

"Where is everybody at?" I said running my fingers through my messy hair.

"They went sightseeing. Noah's in the shower. You should get ready so we can start looking for your mom." Butch said rubbing my back as I made my way into my room and got ready. I took a shower and got dressed in a pair of dark blue skinny jeans, a white button up top that was slightly longer than usual that I didn't tuck in, a black thin leather jacket with silver zippers on the sleeves and neckline, and a pair of high black leather boots with heels. I pulled my hair into a tight ponytail and left my bangs out.

"You didn't have to dress up." Noah said.

"I didn't." I said grabbing the keys to the apartment as we left.

The daytime was beautiful. We stepped outside and climbed into the jeep.

"Morning Jim." I said sliding in the car.

"Good morning. Where to?" he asked as I pulled out my iPhone.

"Brooklyn. Here, it's a list of addresses we need to go to." I said handing him a sheet of paper.

"Okay." he said pulling off as Noah looked at me.

"Where are we going?" he asked as Butch looked out the window, not paying us any attention.

"To Aunt Sharon's house. That's the only place that I'm sure Mommy would go." I said as he sighed.

About 30 minutes later, we pulled up to my aunts building. There were the usual guys hanging around outside and drug addicts walking around trying to buy their next fix. We made our way into my aunts building and stepped onto the piss smelling elevator.

"You guys grew up here?" Butch asked as Noah looked at him.

"Yeah, why?" I asked.

"Nothing, I just think compared to Compton, this place is worst."

"I somehow doubt that." I said stepping off the elevator as the sound of Spanish music filled the air. I walked down the hall and knocked on the apartment door.

"The music is too loud." Noah said turning the knob and walking in. The apartment was full of people. Kids running around everywhere and adults drinking and dancing. We made our way through the crowd but was immediately stopped.

"Aye dios mio! Jasmine is that you?" my aunt yelled pulling me into a hug. "How have you been? You're so big now!"

"I know. I've been fine. You?"

"Good. Today's your cousin's birthday. Come." she said grabbing my hand and pulling me towards the back to a bedroom. "Angel! Come here!" she yelled banging on the door.

"What ma?" he asked annoyed exiting the room. "Who's she?"

"You don't remember us now?" Noah asked stepping forward. My cousin looked at him, a confused look taking over his face.

"Oh shit. Noah, Jasmine, how y'all? I haven't seen you two in years. Damn Jas, you got thick. Still ugly though." he joked as I pushed him.

"Shut up. This is Butch. He's like family." I said introducing him to my cousin and aunt.
