Eighty-One

The day was tiring. I was endlessly trying to find temporary job opportunities for my "husband" so I can earn some cash. The only I came up with was that my husband should look instead of me and that I should either be at home or at their home. I almost imploded.

I re-paid the inn keeper before trudging up the steps to my room. As I passed the rooms, I heard conversations, arguments, or nothing at all.

I finally reached my room, same as before, and walked in. I slammed my door, mood sour from my lack of luck and the plenty of sexist comments. I dropped my bag on the rickety old chair, sighing in defeat.

How am I going to be able to stay in this inn? How am I going to be able to afford the carriage and transportation to see C/N. Oh
C/N.

I know I should feel guilty about the kiss with Alexander, but I don't. It makes me guilty for not feeling guilty. I laid on my bed and sighed again.

Was C/N even still alive? This entire journey was for him. What am I going to tell Mr.C/L/N if C/N is gone? No! I can't think like that! I just can't! I sat back up and looked outside. It was sundown and I haven't eaten all day long. My stomach rumbled in agreement.

I leaned forward and plucked an apple I bought from the bag. I bit into it before falling back down.

I really didn't want to fake my gender again. Having to tighten my corset so much that my breasts had to be concealed left marks. I didn't mind the looser clothes though.

There was a knock and I sat up. "Who is it?" I asked tentatively. "It's the inn keeper!" The old man croaked. I winced and stood. I smoothed my skirts before walking over. I opened the door and was immediately pressed to the wall.

General Howe was pining me to the wall, four redcoats storming in. "W-What is happening?" I stammered, fear swarming me.

Howe snapped his fingers and the soldiers started tearing my room apart. "We heard about you from a little friend of mine." Howe whispered threateningly to me. I swallowed.

"You aren't married. You're not even engaged! Prancing around like a man! Stupid, foolish, Schuyler girl!" He spat on my face and I recoiled.

"You cost me good men with that fire stunt you pulled! And now you just had to take my men! Just had to save your lover!" I struggled to breathe. How did he find out?! He pinned me harder.

I gagged and choked. "I'll tell you what I told your pathetic sailors! British scum!" I spat at him and he cursed.

"General." We both looked. A soldier was holding me letters from Alexander and Princeton. I swallowed as Howe snatched them, opening them.

I watched as the general scanned the letters, eyes widening with every word. "You and your sister's fiancé shagging?" He asked. I choked. "No! I'd never!" I managed out. He ripped my letters. "And Princeton?! Stupid." I fumed.

He pinned my harder, gathering my hands. He tied them with a cloth and I swallowed. "Tell me, girl. Where is your father's troops? I know you bumped into them. And who did you arrive with?"

I spat on him. "Do your worst!" I snapped. He scoffed and tugged me off the wall. "Challenge accepted." He shouted into my ear. I winced but didn't falter.

He shoved me forward and I started walking, knowing I signed my death warrant. I stumbled but collected myself. If the people were to see me, I'd let them know I was a proud patriot.

I stepped forward, head held high. We started down the steps, tenants staring and whispering. They shut up when they met either my glare or Howe's.

When we reached the doors, I turned to Howe quickly. "When you are done questioning me, which will result as a fail, do send my body to New York. Any town, really. Then they will know where to take me." I asked kindly. He spat at me again and shoved me into the chaotic public.
