Shikamaru laid on the ground initially unwilling to fight.
"That damn Naruto," he gritted.

The crowd grew upset and starting throwing anything they can get this hands rather that was, banana peels, soda (pop), cartons of ramen you name it.
"Stand up and start the match already!" They roared.
Evidently, people don't want to see the minor players' matches since they were really looking forward to Sasuke's match...If people aren't electing anything exciting from this battle, makes no sense to have one, right?
"What? You're giving up, too?" Temari scoffed.
He lifted his head up, "Wait...my opponents a girl again?"
"—Hey why aren't you moving!"
"—Yeah get started already!"
The crowd roared again.
"That kid has zero fighting spirit from the beginning..." Asuma sighed.
Naruto began stomping furiously, "C'mon! What is he doing?!"
"I kinda wish I was in the fight now," Y/n pouted.
Gaara gave her a once-over and laughed.
Y/n leered and rushed over but was quickly stopped by Kankuro.
"Let's night repeat history," he says.
"Look at him glaring at me like that—he wants me make him bleed again!"
Gaara grew a little aggravated by her remarks.
"Enough you guys," Shino abruptly speaks.
"Ugh. C'mon Shikamaru! Get it together and do it!" Naruto shouted.
"If you don't come, the I will," Temari sprinted towards him.
Shikamaru sighed and took out his kunai, still laid back on the ground. "Man, this girl is so gung-ho."
She lifts her fan and slams it on the ground, seemingly looking as if she crushed Shikamaru. As she picked it back up she realized he wasn't under the now crumbled terrain.
He stood on the other side of her and smirked. "It doesn't really matter if I become a Chunin or not. But there's no reason for me to lose to a girl. Well let's do it!"
"Yuh, Idiot! Tell me your sexist without actually telling me," she raised her fan again swinging a aggressive force with a whirl wind, and again misses. This guy's quick to run away...
Shikamaru was now hiding out behind a tree. He quickly studies the arena and its elements and comes up with a plan.
"Shikamaru! You get her with a torrent of 16 combinations...!" Ino kicked around cheering him on.
Choji was stuffing his face with potato chips, finally arriving to see the match. "This seat taken."
"Y/n was sitting her but she went over—Huh? Choji?! Your stomach is okay now!" She asked.
He nodded and sat down. "What? Wasn't Sasuke's match next?"
Ino quickly shushed him and pointed at a gloomy Sakura who was pouting in her seat.
"Everything's fine, right, Sakura? After ask, it's Sasuke, right? That's what Y/n would say?"
"Y/n...why is everytime we talk about him her name magically comes up, too?" She leered.
"I mean—just a reference she knows him more than you so I assume she would be a reliable source, that's all!" Ino began muttering and Sakura began sulking again.
Right now, I should just stop talking and leave her alone, Ino thought to herself.
"It looks like Shikamaru is taking part in this final battle? It seems like he's in the wrong place though," Choji says.
"Don't say that!" Ino protested. "I certainly don't say that he has any great techniques, but Shikamaru is always good at strategizing."
"Hmm, yeah well..."
"And after all, he jumped down into the arena himself. He seems uncharacteristically driven. Even he can be passionate once in a while!" She added.
Geez. I envy that cloud right now, look at it being so free...I guess I pretty much am completely without desire...Even the reason why I became a Ninja...was because I Thai would have a fun life, you know..."
He smirked, "Well I guess it's not much I can do, gotta work with me what I have."
"What's with that stupid look on his face?" Temari scrutinized. "Ninja Art: Wine Scythe Jutsu!"
She swung her fan, that send a forceful amount of wind through the whole stadium even pushing a the crowd.
She stood waiting for a sign, her eyes widened, and she gasped.
A shadow on the ground quickly crept its way towards her. She instinctively jumps back but wasn't getting really far. She notice it stop, revealing it had its limitations, so she marked the spot it had stopped at.
Stuck in what to do, Shikamaru flips his hands upside down, so each fingertip is touching the other.
"What? What is that sign...?" Kurenai asked.
Asuma smiled, "That's no sign. That's like his habit."
"Habit...?" She questioned.
"Shikamaru enjoys passing time slowly. That guy's like an old man. That's why he likes Japanese checkers and chess and always makes me be his opponent. When he gets stuck on a move, he always does that thing with his hands," Asuma explained.
"I see," she nodded.
Y/n couldn't help but noticed it as well, it's was what he did the first day he met her. She was going out to run errands for the shop keepers when she got caught up in the rain. She sheltered at this spot Shikamaru happened to be at. He was carrying the Japanese board game when he offered to play with her why they wait for the rain to stop and she noticed he had done that tactic with hands before he made a move he wasn't one-hundred percent comfortable with.
"He's working out his strategy," she smirked.
"Huh?" Naruto leaned over.
"N-Nothing! Why are you so close?!" She whacked him on the head.
"Ow! Why do you keep hitting me!" He groaned. "You didn't hit Shikamaru?" he squinted.
"What are you talking about," she hit him again. "I'm not even hitting you," she slapped his head.
"Hey! That's it!" He says before playfully roughhousing with each other, they were quickly told to cut it out by Shinobi nearby.
Despite the commotion above them, Temari has seen Shikamaru's primary attack in action and knows how it works. It appears that Temari is able to evade Shikamaru's technique and adapt to his tactics; however Shikamaru had been luring her to the tunnel Naruto created in the previous match.
Shikamaru catches her in his trap through use of the tunnel and clearly has won.
"My...body...is...?!" She gritted.
"At last...Shadow Possession Jutsu is a success!"
"Woo! Way to go Shikamaru!" Y/n cheered.
"How did he do that...?" Kurenai says, stunned.
"That's his skill, strategizing and planning ahead," Asuma grinned.
"Yes! You did it!" Naruto shouted, Ino and Choji joined in.
"Good grief...I give up!" He announced.
Everyone stood in shock, even Termari.
"You what..." Y/n jaw-dropped.
"What?!" The crowd roared in anger.
"See I told you he'd give up," Choji told Ino.
Shikamaru explained that he had exerted too much chakra in capturing Temari to continue the match, also adding that if he continued and won, it would just mean more work.
"Yeah, this was all such a pain, it really started weighing on me the more I thought about it it the more I didn't wanna do it," shrugged.
That guy's a strange one. Hayate laughed, "The winner is Temari!"
"I'm gonna kill him..." Y/n grumbled.
