,,Miss Cabello, is your turn." A woman said and I stood up from my chair and entered an office.
I was looking for a job at a dental praxis now that I graduated college. My mom and dad were dentists and I wanted to be one too to make them proud of me.
,,Hello, Miss Cabello! Take a sit." Mr Smith said as I entered his office and pointed at a chair for me to sit down.
,,My name is Karla Camila Cabello. I just graduated college and-" I sat down and presented myself as suddenly my phone started ringing.
Fuck! Camila you're an idiot! Why don't you put your phone on silent!?
I looked at the screen and saw that my sister, Nina, was calling me. She was on the way to me together with her 3 months old daughter. The father of Riley, Nina's daughter, left as he heard that Nina was pregnant. I know, very mature. Nina went back to our hometown to our old family house for her pregnancy. She wanted to visit me this weekend, so I could see her baby.
,,I've to answer this call. I'm very sorry Mr Smith." I said and saw that the man was already looking disappointed at me.
,,Go ahead." He said and I answered the phone.
,,Hello? Nina?"
,,Camilita! We're on the way to you. We just set off. What are you doing?" Nina said happily and excited on the phone.
,,Nina, I told you I have a few job interviews this morning. I can't talk right now. Is there something important you need to tell me?"
,,Oh- Sorry sis! There's nothing important. Riley and I just wanted to check on our favorite Camilita. Right, Riley?"
,,If that's all, I really need to hang up. See you later, Nina. Give Riley a kiss from me."
,,I will. See you! Love you!"
I hung up and turned my attention back to Mr Smith who looked disappointed and disgusted at me. Did I do something wrong?
,,I'm sorry Mr Smith. This was my sister. I thought it was important. Can we move on?" I asked him, but he waved me off and said.
,,No thank you. I saw enough. You aren't a responsible person." He said and I just looked confused at him.
,,I'm sorry Mr Smith, but I don't understand... Why am I not responsible?"
,,I said I heard enough! Madison please bring the next person in!" He said and I just took my stuff and stormed out from his office.
Asshole!
I took a Taxi and went to my next job interview. I needed a job urgently! I only had my part time job at a restaurant, but that wasn't enough to pay my bills. I studied to be a dentist, not a waitress.
The next interview was working well. At least that's what I thought, but suddenly my phone rang again.
,,I'm sorry." I said and I wanted to hung up, but I saw that it was the hospital. I was confused to see that so I said: ,,I think it's important, sir... I need to answer this."
,,It's okay. Don't worry." The man said and I answered the phone.
,,Is this Camila Cabello?" A woman on the phone asked.
,,Yes, it is."
,,We have some bad news for you... There was a car accident. Your sister's car was included and I think you should get here as fast as possible."
I froze at her words and suddenly stood up from my chair, took my stuff and left without saying another word. I rushed out of the building and tried to get a Taxi."
,,Fuck all this New York traffic!" I murmured to myself.
It took minutes till I got a free Taxi and I thought I was about to get a crises.
,,To the hospital, please." I said to the man in the taxi.
The whole ride felt like an eternity and I yelled at the driver all the way cause he was driving like a ninety years old grandma.
As the taxi finally pulled over in front of the hospital, I got out and went to the reception.
,,I'm Camila Cabello. I was told that my sister and niece are here. Their names are Nina and Riley Cabello."
The woman who was at the reception suddenly looked at me with a sad facial expression as I told them the names.
What if they are dead!? They are the only family I have. Everyone is dead..they can't be dead too...
,,Miss Cabello, Riley is room number 5. She's sleeping, but you can see her if you want."
,,And my sister? Where's my sister?" I asked panicking.
,,I'm sorry Miss...She died at the impact."
I felt how something ripped my heart in millions of pieces as I heard that words coming out the woman's mouth.
I reached for something to support myself. My legs felt like jelly and I fell on the floor as I couldn't find anything to support myself so I fell on the floor.
,,Miss Cabello! Can someone bring her a glass of water?" The woman at the reception shouted and a man immediately came to me with a glass of water.
,,Here. Drink this." He said and wanted to hand me the glass, but I didn't take it.
,,No.. I'm okay.."
,,You should drink it, Miss." He said, but I ignored him and just stood up.
I made my way to room number 5 and didn't look behind.
I stood in front of the door for a few moments thinking about Riley. Riley is just a baby and has no mother and a father who abandoned her.
,,Miss Cabello? I'm Doctor Young, Riley's doctor." A woman introduced herself and interrupted my thoughts. ,,Riley is a lucky baby. The car that hit your sister's and Riley's car, hit the driver seat and your sister died immediately, but Riley got out just with a few bruises. Miss Cabello your sister wanted you to take care of Riley if she dies. So, my question is if you want to take Riley or if you don't who is gonna take Riley."
,,There's no one who can take her besides me. I'll take her." I said while I tried so hard not to cry.
,,That's all I wanted to say... Riley is already ready to go."
,,Really?"
,,Yes. Like I said, she was REALLY lucky. I'm sorry for your sister.." The doctor said and with that, I entered the room and saw Riley for the first time in my life. She was so tiny and beautiful. She was looking so peaceful and undisturbed. I sat on a chair next to her baby bed and looked at her. She suddenly started to stretch herself and yawned. At that, my heart melted and I felt in love with the human in front of my eyes.
,,Miss Cabello? Riley's and Nina's stuff from the accident are next to the chair. When you're ready to go, just go to the reception and they'll check out Riley." The doctor said, I nodded and she left.
I looked at the stuff and saw a lot of baby stuff, but I also saw Nina's bag. I couldn't help, but open it. As I touched the material, I felt tears running down my cheek. I opened it and saw her phone, her wallet and stuff like that. I also saw a little box. I took it out of her bag and opened it. It was a little necklace that had Nina's, Riley's and my initials. I started crying and that's what Riley did too. I put the box back in the bag and turned my attention back to Riley.
,,Hey, Riley! I'm Camila, your aunt. You don't know me, but we are family... You're my only family...." I said and touched her cheek with my index finger. I was surprised as she took my finger in her little hand.
I saw that she was only in a diaper, so I took her bag with my free hand and looked after some clothes. I took a baby bodysuit and some baby pants. I started to get her dressed and to my surprise she let me get her dressed.
,,So, I'll get you dressed and then I guess we'll go together at my apartment. You'll sleep with me till we get the stuff from your old home... You know your mommy loved you and we both also loved her..." I said while I got her dressed and packed all the stuff.
,,I don't have a car...so I have to call a taxi to get us home. I know you can't speak and you don't realize what is happening, but anyways.."
Fuck! How the fuck am I supposed to work now!? I have a three months old baby and no job.
Tears were falling down my cheek as I picked up Riley and tried at the same time to carry all the stuff. We went to the reception and I quickly wiped all the tears away.
,,Miss Cabello.. Are you here to check Riley out?" The woman who told me the news earlier asked.
,,Yes." I simply said and we left after the woman gave me the okay.
As we got outside the hospital, the taxi was already there. I put all the stuff in the trunk of the taxi and then I got in the backseat together with Riley. I told the driver the address and then leaned my head agains the window while I held Riley as tight as possible.
,,You have a beautiful baby." The driver said and I saw him smile trough the back mirror.
,,Thanks.." I simply said and gave him a sad smile.
Riley was silent the whole ride. Well it's not like she can speak or something like that, but she didn't even cry or anything. She just stayed silent like me. As we got at the destination, I paid the driver and thanked him. I got out of the car together with Riley and then took the stuff from the trunk. I got my keys and opened the door at the entrance of the building and then somehow got upstairs with all the stuff and Riley. I opened the door to my apartment and threw the stuff on the floor and then took Riley to my bedroom. I put her down on the bed and she started giggling. My heart melted as I saw her giggling and rolling on the bed. It was like I forgot for a moment all the bad things.
My happiness got interrupted by my phone. I looked at the screen and saw that Addison, my best friend, was calling.
,,Hello?" I answered the phone and wiped my tears away.
,,Mila! How were your interviews by now? When is the next one? I forgot and I want to take you, your sis and your niece on a girls night. I know your niece is a baby, but ANYWAYS!"
As I heard Addison mentioning my sister I started crying again and sat next to the bed.
,,Mila? Why are you crying? What happened?"
I couldn't answer and just continued crying.
,,Mila, where are you?"
,,Home.." I somehow managed to say.
,,On the way." Addison said and hung up.
I wiped my tears away and looked back at Riley who looked happy. I put my arms on the edge of the bed and my chin on top of them. I just looked at Riley enjoying her happiness.
What the fuck was I gonna do?
A few minutes later I heard the door open and someone shouting:
,,Mila?"
Addison entered my bedroom a few seconds later and was confused as she saw me on the floor watching Riley.
,,She's so cute! Oh my god! Where's Nina? And why were you crying on the phone?"
I felt a few tears falling down my cheek as I said:
,,Nina and Riley were in a car accident... Nina died, Adi. She died and what am I supposed to do now!? I have to take care of Riley and I don't even have a job to pay the bills for this apartment!"
Addison came next to me and hugged me tight while I was crying and continued:
,,I have to organize her funeral and I have to bring Riley's stuff here because there's no way I can move back home. It's just a small town and I need a job and I can't even find one here!"
,,Mila, I- I'm here for you. Okay? You have me and I'll help you as much as I can. Let's make a deal. Okay?" I nodded and she continued. ,,I'll organize the funeral and I'm gonna make sure Riley's stuff gonna get here. You are just gonna focus on getting a job and, of course, taking care of Riley, but you have to promise me that if there's anything you need help with you are gonna tell me. Alright?"
,,Alright." I said and started calming fown a little bit while Addison was rubbing my back comforting me.
,,When is your next interview?"
,,In an hour. I'm gonna go now with Riley to a shop and buy a baby carriage and then I'll take her with me to the interview. You have to go to your interview at that hour too so I've to do it."
I broke the hug with Addison and wiped my tears away while I picked up Riley from the bed.
,,Do you want me to come with you? It doesn't matter if I get a little late to the interview-"
,,No. It's okay. I get this. I have to." I said and with that I took Riley's baby bag, my phone, my wallet and my keys and we all exited the apartment.
,,Taxi!" Addison shouted and a taxi stopped. ,,Don't you come too?"
,,I’ll go to the baby shop that is a few streets away. I can walk."
,,Okay. Love you, Mila. You are the strongest person alive. You know that?"
,,Love you too." I said and ignored her question.
It was pretty hard to walk with a baby in your arm and a bag in the other. People were just walking by. No man was yelling behind me ar how bombastic my ass was or other shit. It was like I was invisible.
,,If I just knew that a baby keeps you safe from creeps I would have got one earlier." I said to Riley and she giggled like she understood me.
