I sat next to my father, his breathing was steady. The tears on my cheeks had dried the pain I felt had numbed. My mother was listening to the doctor's words, but the heart monitors were the only thing I heard.

Was this my fault? Could he not take the fact that I didn't want to marry David? I didn't even get to finish my sentence before he collapsed. A fresh set of tears brimmed in my eyes, it was my fault. My selfish desire to marry for love and not for the good of the country.

The doctor excused himself from the room and my mom turned her attention to me. Sorrow was written across her face and I looked down.

"The doctor said that he should make a full recovery, but nothing for sure," I nodded my head. She sighed, "I'll give you a minute," she softly closed the hospital door as she walked out of the room.

"Hey, dad..." I whispered unsure of what to say. "What I wanted to say, before...before this happened was..." A sob caught in my throat and I wiped my eyes with my sleeve. "I-I wanted to marry Tom, do you remember him? He's the prince of England," I couldn't control the tears as they rolled down my face.

It was quiet for a few minutes before I heard my father attempt to speak.

"I...is that...w-what y-you...want?" I looked up, his eyes opened slightly, and he was looking at me. I gripped his hand harder subconsciously.

"Y-yes, it is," I said through sobs. He gave me a small, weak smile.

"If his parents will permit it, then I support the decision," I smiled and hugged him while sobbing into his shoulder.

"Th-thank you!" I said through tears. I sat back in my seat next to the bed and his smile disappeared. He raised his hand weakly and I took it.

"Y...you are m...my first-born child. Y...you have been raised for this since the day you were born. I have no doubt that the decision you've made is the right one," I smiled through the tears.

"Thank you, father!" I smiled. He nodded and closed his eyes.

"Now I can rest easy knowing that I will be able to see you happy and this kingdom in good health," I sighed, now was not the time to remind him. Not now, when he seemed to be happier and his health slowly getting better. He fell asleep and his hand went limp in mine, startling me for a minute. His steady breath calmed me down and I stood up quietly making my way out of the room.

Sorry this is so short, the next one should be longer 😊
