The quest to Erebor was over, the great battle fought and won, though you did not celebrate. You'd lost three dwarves you had cared deeply about in the fight. One was like a father to you. Another, one of his nephews, was your best friend. And you had loved the third, given your heart completely to him, only for it to shatter into a million pieces at his death. You sat at the edge of the ruins of Dale, legs dangling over the edge of a cliff, tears flowing nonstop down your cheeks like waterfalls. A shadow fell beside you and Gandalf sat down on an old stone bench just behind you. There was silence for a long moment before you asked him, your voice rough and quiet;

"Why did they have to go?"

Gandalf pondered this for only a short moment before responding solemnly;

"Death is just another path. One that we all must take."

You raised your head and gazed up at the stars sadly.

"Will I see them again? Once I am up there as well?"

"Remember, Y/N, your time has not yet come. Live, and live well. You will see them once again when it is your time."
