"Get back!"

The cricket bat slammed against the door of my crate with a terrifying BANG! as I shuffled hastily back. I pressed my back against the back of the crate and fought for breath. With my heart pounding, I crept forward once more to the door of the crate. Through the glass window, I could see him lying on the table.

"I said GET BACK!"

Once again the scientist slammed the cricket bat against the door to scare me into moving back. It was doing a good job at it to. Since I was only 8(ish), the bangs were a lot more terrifying to me as it would have been to an older child.

All I wanted to do was know what was happening to him. I wanted to know what was happening to my brother. Why were they hurting him? Why?

Soon after, the screams started. I wanted to know what they were doing to my brother to make him scream, but I knew that if I dared to look, the dreaded cricket bat would be back against the door before I could get a proper look. The screams got louder. My whole body was shaking in agony and fear. I curled up into the tightest ball I could get into and covered my ears. Stop! I kept saying to myself as the screams rang in my ears. Please just stop! Stop! Then, in the sheer horror of it all, I found myself screaming with him. Tears ran down my cheeks. I heard a series of terrible bangs as the scientist slammed the bat on my door "Shut up!" he barked, but this just made me scream louder.

Then I heard a key turn in a lock and a door open. Light flooded into the crate and I covered my eyes. A man's angry face filled the doorway. "I told you to SHUT UP!" he shouted. But then, hardly knowing what I was doing, wanting only for this nightmare to be over, I kicked him where it counted!

The scientist dropped the cricket bat and doubled over in pain. I barged past him and dashed out of the crate. The other's stopped torchering my brother on gave chase "Catch her!" one of them was saying "CATCH EXPERIMENT 9!" I stood still for a moment, unsure what to do. It was then that I noticed an open window. I flew across the lab, past about four other crates and towards the window with the scientists snagging at my bare feet. Then I remembered my brother. I did a quick U-turn and ran back, through the scientists legs before crashing into the operating table.

Now I had a close up veiw of what they had been doing. I won't go into the gory details, but basically they were doing what they had done to me...to all of us. They were unravelling his DNA ready to put something else into it. And like me, like all of us, he was awake through the whole thing.

I was to busy staring in horror at my brother to see a scientist come up behind me. Before I could react, they had caught me. I twisted and turned trying to get free but one of them plunged a needle into my arm and push the syringe home. In a few minuets I felt very sleepy. That was when I realised what they had given me was a general anaesthetic.

Someone was holding me by the scruff of my neck and carring me back to my crate. Enerything was just a soundless blur now. I was thrown into the crate but I was to tired to move. The door closed and I could just hear my brother's screams from what seemed like miles away.

Another failed attampt to escape. But I knew I would get away someday...somehow...
